Our Summer Interns

Normally, college and graduate students from across the country and beyond come to Dow Jones to work in our Technology department for 10 weeks in the summer as part of our internship program. Typically, we begin the recruitment process in November of the previous year, and the 30 or so that we select join us at the start of June.

Not this year.

Because of the coronavirus pandemic, we had to cancel our internship program in the middle of the hiring process. We were so disappointed. A lot of our teams internally were excited about the schedule of events that we had planned, but we realized it wouldn’t have been fair or possible to give students the comprehensive experience they deserved while we were all working from home, and while we were still figuring out how to work from home ourselves.

Our VP of Engineering, Mona Soni, asked our Chief Product & Technology Officer Ramin Beheshti, if she could put together an alternative program for all the applicants. She worked with me on an exciting schedule of weekly events, including hearing from our newsroom leadership, a seminar on Agile methodology, a panel on careers at Dow Jones, a session from our senior developers on how we build our apps, an educational Cybersecurity escape room activity, an introduction to data science introduction and, last but not least, a “game day” hosted by Amazon.

We were blown away by how many students signed up. We quickly reached one hundred signups, and had consistent attendance to the events throughout. We were very impressed by the students and graduates that participated.

I want to say thank you to the leaders at Dow Jones that participated in the sessions, including Louise Story, Rodney Holloway, Chhaya Sarda, Emi Nakatsugawa, Dion Bailey, Chris Nelson, Surya Mylavarapu, Caroline Albanese, Steve Stevenson, Scott Rahner, Scott Canham, Mia Farbes, Giulia Stephanik, Jian Gong, Breck Wills and, of course, our very own Chief Product & Technology Officer Ramin Beheshti. Phew!
