The singer of “Mellow Yellow” was overjoyed to learn he would be joining Maroon 5 for the halftime show in Atlanta.

“It’s been a few lean years,” said the Hurdy Gurdy Man, christened Donovan Phillips Leitch but best known as simply Donovan.

“I know I’m going to take a lot of flack,” said Superbowl Producer Paul Whiteman. “Atlanta is the home of a thriving black music scene. But that’s why we went with Donovan, because he has some real funk to some of his songs, like “Sunshine Superman” for instance. That joint has some real cronk.”

Whiteman disputed the claim that black artists were boycotting the NFL.

“That’s not true,” he said. “Milli Vanilli were considering our offer for a few weeks. Ultimately we went with Donovan, because he’s better, girl you know it’s true.”

In another surprise, Donovan announced he would also be hosting the 2019 Oscars in March.

“I’ve never done stand up comedy,” the singer admitted. “But a lot of people think I’m funny. It’s wild, after three decades of near unemployment, it’s going to be a busy few months for me. That’s show biz, I guess — feast or famine.”

To cap off this remarkable comeback, a “Donovan For President” movement has begun in Iowa, even though he’s not native born and not really qualified for any of the above positions.

“We need a celebrity,” said Democratic Party Chairperson, Roy Laustcus. “Trust me, we’d love it to be Tom Hanks or Oprah, but they ain’t playin’ ball. Right now Donovan is what we got.”

For a first bumper sticker and campaign slogan, Democrats are going with “I’m Just Wild About Donovan.”

Donald Trump responded, “I don’t think it’s a good idea for the Democrats to run a foreign born candidate for president again. Just sayin’. But I am looking forward to the music at the Superbowl. And by music I mean the ‘Star Spangled Banner.’ If this Scottish person called Donovan chooses to kneel for that, he’s a son of a b***h.”
