I regularly overestimate the amount of time I have to keep up with current news and get sucked into magazine and newspaper subscriptions.

Currently, I am a proud subscriber to The Washington Post, The New York Times, and The Economist.

I also had a subscription to The New Yorker, The Guardian, Die Zeit, and Profil. All at the same time.

Note how I’m calling myself a subscriber, not a reader: “Ain’t nobody got time for this.”

I know this, but still, when current events get heated, and I spend more time keeping up to date with world news, I fall into the subscription trap again.

The problem with canceling newspaper and magazine subscriptions is that a lot of them make you talk to people first.

Having failed repeatedly to get rid of my New York Times subscription, I have a few tips and a success story to share:

Today I successfully terminated my subscription to The Economist.

The Key Elements to Getting Out of a Subscription:

  1. Check the cancelation policy before you subscribe. If there is no online cancelation, don’t take it. This makes all additional steps unnecessary.
