What is a Salon? Salons are gatherings to exchange ideas on art, science and society. Salons flourished in Paris of the Enlightenment, with one peculiarity: Salons competed with universities, which excluded women. Salons not only welcomed women, but the best Salons were run by women. Benjamin Franklin, while in Paris, was an avid attendee, who famously quipped: knowledge and wine, what an enchanting combination!

In that spirit, and because Miami was born from the determination of Julia Tuttle to turn a wilderness into a significant city, the city of Miami, the current Downtown, the Salon 125 Years of Miami History has gathered a number of remarkable ladies and men to explore the evolution of our Magic City.

Some of the topics to be covered: Julia Tuttle, the businesswoman; the evolution of Miami’s architecture, influences and traditions; the evolution of the judiciary; a comparative take on the population explosions between 1900 and the 1920’s, and 2000 and the 2020s; the preservation of historic buildings through repurposing; and how our cultural institutions have propelled economic development.
