An underground cable was cut and there is no electricity going to the traffic light at the corner of NE 2nd Avenue and NE Second Street. Second Avenue is used by motorists as a mini highway along which to speed away. A yellow light is an invitation to accelerate, imagine what happens without a traffic light!

“Five hundred people have to cross every day from the LOFT 2 to the parking,” said a resident. “I start every day putting my self at risk?”

The corner of NE 2 Av and NE 2 St. Traffic light has not been working for close to a month. How long does it take to fix a broken cable? Don’t ask FPL. Photo, Aurea Veras.

It’s been more than three weeks and FPL has not repaired the broken cable. It is taking the Florida Power & Light giant more than three weeks to fix a problem that threatens, literally, the lives of downtown residents.

What FPL has done, however, is propose a base-rate increase starting next year. FPL has proposed a 1.1 billion increase, which costumers will see reflected on their monthly bills.

How can that be? Well, it’s downtown Miami!

UPDATE — Community Involvement

March 16. Downtown witnessed the result of a community effort to solve a dangerous situation. After more than three weeks not having a traffic light at a busy intersection, which threatened the safety of hundreds of residents, the property management at the LOFT 2 joined forces with Downtown News, the office of Commissioner Higgins, and the President of the DNA to have FPL fix it.
