Hurricane Day
May 19, Frost Science Museum
Winds of over 180 mph, storm surge over 30 feet high, rainfall totals over 60 inches, hurricanes are among nature’s most powerful and destructive phenomena. No wonder the original meaning of hurricane, in the Taino Language of the Caribean, was “evil curse of the sea.”
Join Frost Science and explore the science of hurricanes with a day devoted to learning about the ingredients needed for hurricanes to form and strengthen, the process of hurricane forecasting, the latest research being conducted regarding hurricanes (all with the aim to better understand, predict and communicate about them), and most importantly, how you and your family can be prepared if a hurricane were to impact South Florida this hurricane season.
Partners will include the American Red Cross, Greater Miami and The Keys, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue’s Office of Emergency Management, National Hurricane Center, National Weather Service, NOAA’s Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory, and the University of Miami.

Mini-Me Science: Spinning Spirals

Mini-Me Science is Frost Science’s program designed for you and your little one (children ages four and younger). program designed for you and your little one (children ages four and younger). Today’s activity: whirling, twirling, spinning spiral patterns will be explored as we examine the science behind the shape of a hurricane! Paid registration is required. Before the Storm with American Red Cross

Explore hurricanes and climate change through a hurricane in a bottle before discovering how sea level rise will affect storm surge from hurricanes with scientists from UM’s Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science.
Corals and Hurricanes

Corals are beautiful, but also play an important role in the protection of our coastlines. Learn about the efforts Frost Science is doing to help restore our coastline corals in our Inventors Lab.
Eye of the Storm with NOAA’s Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory

What’s it like to fly into a hurricane? How do hurricanes form? How do hurricanes intensify? AOML will have hurricane hunters on hand to answer these questions and more. Visitors can also see a model of AOML’s small unmanned aerial system that flies into hurricanes.

Hurricane Safety 101 with Miami-Dade Fire Rescue

Do you live in an evacuation zone? What do you need to be prepared for the storm? Learn to use the online tool to “Know Your Zone” and play a game in hurricane survival before picking up a hurricane guide.
Hurricane Tracker with the National Hurricane Center and National Weather Service — Miami

How are hurricanes forecasted? What is their biggest threat when they come onshore? What does this hurricane season look like? Get these questions and more answered by the experts while you learn how to track hurricanes at home for yourself!

Explore how mangroves and other gray and green infrastructures can help protect our coastlines during hurricanes with an interactive wave table.
Insider’s Tour — Hurricane Edition
2:15 p.m., Level 5
Take a behind-the-scenes look at ways our building is hurricane ready, from its design and construction, to what procedures Frost Science has in place to ensure that all our animals stay safe during and after a hurricane. This experience even includes access to an animal feeding and encounter. The guided experience lasts approximately 60 minutes in length. (Separate paid registration is required.
