The September 22 Equinox Marks the Beginning of Fall

Temperatures in Miami do drop slightly and the humidity subsides as September advances, but hurricanes remain a threat. The word “hurricane” is a linguistic borrowing from the Arawak, the language of the Taino people, a cultural force in the Caribbean before Columbus. The original meaning was the evil spirit of the sea.

A Month for Beginnings

Schools start in earnest after Labor Day. The Arsht Center kicks off the season in September and October, with theater, the symphony, ballet and opera, as does the Miami Heat. Museums mount their best exhibits for the fall, and, statistically — going by the number of newborns in July and August — autumn also seems to be the season for love.

Time for Downtown NEWS special FALL ISSUE.

PAMM, Frost Science and the Museum of Art and Design attract critical acclaim, and more important, thousands of visitors, young and old. Make sure you read about two Frost Science exhibits revolving around light: Creatures of Light: Nature’s Bioluminescence, and The Sun Spot. On September 30, The Museum of Art and Design hosts the important forum Follow the Carbon: Climate Change, Housing Struggles, and the Reinvention of the Built Environment. Speaking of museums, Downtown NEWS’ column Spotlight features HistoryMiami, a jewel of an institution committed to preserving and celebrating Miami’s history.

Check out Cultural Compass for a curated list of events, and the popular column Eat & Drink.

Getting Political Down the Street?

Public transportation is one of Commissioner Eileen Higgins’ priorities. Many residents in District 5 need reliable public transportation to go to work. And, while at it, she says smiling, you can use your Public Library. She listens to audiobooks downloaded directly to her phone from the Main Library during her regular rides.

Our FALL ISSUE’s Opinion Page can’t be missed. Commentaries include Commissioner Ken Russell’s take on the Budget and Let Parks Be Parks by DNA’s Matilda Kalaveshi. The Cover Story is devoted to County Commissioner Eileen Higgins, a downtown resident interviewed over drinks at the epitome of a neighborhood bar, Lost Boy.

Dispatches from DNA’s education tsarina Joy Prevor cover everything from school redistricting to money issues. In Editorials, DNA’s new president, Amal Solh Kabbani, outlines her vision for the upcoming year. And the Downtown NEWS Editor summarizes the neighborhood in numbers.

For Our Streets, local preservationist Terrell Fritz pens a uniquely sarcastic View from Flagler Street, and a word by Steve Dutton on the upcoming inauguration of Avenue 3.
