Hamilton on Tour
At the Arsht Center for the Performing Arts.
HAMILTON is the story of America’s Founding Father Alexander Hamilton, an immigrant from the West Indies who became George Washington’s right-hand man during the Revolutionary War and was the new nation’s first Treasury Secretary. Featuring a score that blends hip-hop, jazz, blues, rap, R&B, and Broadway.
The show incorporates color-conscious casting of non-white actors as the Founding Fathers and other historical figures. Through this use of modern storytelling methods, Hamilton has been described as being about “America then, as told by America now.”
Hamilton was inspired on the 2004 biography Alexander Hamilton by historian Ron Cherno.
It premiered at the Off-Broadway Public Theater on February 17, 2015, winning eight Drama Desk Awards, including Outstanding Musical. Hamilton then transferred to Broadway, opening on August 6, 2015, where it received very positive reviews and strikingly high box office sales, and a record-setting 16 Tonny nominations. It won 11 awards, including Best Musical. In 2016, Hamilton won the Pulitzer for Drama.
The musical details Hamilton’s life in two acts, with book, music, and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda, direction by Thomas Kail, choreography by Andy Blankenbuehler and musical supervision and orchestrations by Alex Lacamoire.
