La bohème, the world’s most beloved opera, is the opening production of Florida Grand Opera’s 78th Season. Giacomo Puccini’s heartbreaking tragedy is scheduled for four performances at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts in Miami from November 3–11.
“La bohème is a cherished staple of opera for audiences in South Florida,” says General Director and CEO, Susan T. Danis. “Giacomo Puccini is immensely popular with audiences throughout the world. He’s well known for his soaring melodies, great sense of theater, and rich, atmospheric orchestrations of masterpieces such as Madam Butterfly, Tosca, Turandot, and of course, La bohème.”
About the Opera
La Bohème is based on Henri Murger’s novel, “Scenes from the Bohemian Life.” (more than a novel is a series of vignettes without a unifying plot.) Set in the frigid cold of a Paris winter in the 1830s, it follows the loves and fortunes of a small group of friends: the poet Rodolfo, the seamstress Mimi, the painter Marcello, the musician Schaunard, the philosopher Colline, and the coquette Musetta.
La Bohème was also the inspiration behind the huge Broadway hit musical Rent. In addition, due to its popularity, the music from La Bohème has appeared in numerous films including “Atonement”, “Moonstruck”, “The Boondock Saints”, “The Great Caruso” and “Mimi.”
Protagonists
Adrienn Miksch (2016, The Passenger) returns to FGO as Mimì with tenor Alessandro Scotto di Luzio as Rodolfo, making his US debut in this romantic tragedy of young lovers in Paris. Puccini’s magic melodies, including “Si, mi chiamano Mimì” and Musetta’s famous waltz, transform this tale of lovers living on borrowed time into a timeless classic. Directed by Jeffrey Marc Buchman, hailed by South Florida Classical Review as “a formidable talent” and conducted by Ramón Tebar.
Sung in Italian, with projected translations in English and Spanish. Two hours and 30 minutes, including two intermissions.
A Definition
The English word opera is an abbreviation of the Italian phrase opera in musica (“work in music”).
