Miami, March 15, 2021. Former Houston Chief of Police Art Acevedo has been selected to be Miami’s next Police Chief. Mr. Acevedo, who is a native of Cuba, gained national notoriety for marching with police reform protesters last summer after the killing of George Floyd. He has also been a regular CNN commentator.

New Miami Police Chief Art Acevedo at a Press Conference at City Hall, March 15, 2021.

Mr. Acevedo observed that the success of community policing relies on the leadership’s willingness to confront bad cops. “We believe in social justice, social reform, but don’t confuse kindness for weakness. We also believe in the rule of law… They are not mutually exclusive.” And he added that he expected the men and women of the Miami Police Department to conduct themselves in a manner that made the public a friend and not a foe.

Introducing him in a press conference at City Hall, Mayor Suarez said: “Our Manager, with the help of the City Commission and my intervention brought to Miami the best Chief in America.”

Chief Art Acevedo replaces Jorge Colina, who retired earlier this year. The new Chief should start in four to eight weeks.
