Rap and Gender

Today in class we listened to “Changes” by Tupac and “This is America” by Childish Gambino. We commented on the ways in which class, race, and gender converge in the videos. I would like each of you to share a rap song (paste the lyrics) or video (or both) that you find compelling in regards to the image of masculinity or femininity that it puts forward. This could be a positive or a negative example of the ways that rap both promotes and critiques gendered, class, or racial divides, and can be from any region of the Americas. You also can feel free to choose an artist of any gender.

In your first paragraph, explain (1) why you chose this song and this artist (2) why you like or dislike the artist’s project. In the second, provide us with an analysis of the message behind the song, paying particular attention to gender and/or violence. You might analyze just the beat and the lyrics, or the video as well. It is up to you.
