Educate yourself on the ground conditions. Installation of utilities require proper site preparation. Buried obstacles, especially gas and electric lines, pose a hazard for operators and bystanders.

Check if the soil is rocky or sandy or clayey? How compacted is it? Its moisture content? Once you have determined the ground conditions, you can decide on a safe operating speed. Wet or clayey soils need to be trenched at slower speeds, while dry, sandy or loose soil can be cut at faster speeds. A good trenching speed to be maintained can be around 3 to 5 kmph. Trenching with a skid steer or a loader is done in reverse. Make sure that the area is free of obstacles and that by-standers are not in the harm’s way. Use of sensor based alarm system can be very handy.

Selecting the proper chain to match the ground conditions is very important. Improper chain can get damaged and cause downtime. There are three chain designs to consider: Earth, Diggatac and Combination. Earth chain is best suited for moderately compacted or sandy soil free of floaters and tree roots. A combination chain performs well in general every day trenching. It is suitable for hard soil, roots, soft shale and rocky ground. Diggatac chains are designed for much harder trenching work of cutting in concrete, asphalt or fractured rocks. Whichever chain is selected, make sure it is properly tensioned. Check the operator’s manual for this information.
