Fortunately, there are a myriad of options after you have done your BDS dental degree. Most dentists will work in general practice and within this, there are niches which you can consider. A smaller majority of dentists will work within hospital dentistry. They will work within a specific department such as orthodontics, restorative, and oral medicine. An even smaller number will work within research departments. These include subjects such as oral pathology, and dental materials.

If you decide to work in general practice, an important decision to make is whether you want to work within the NHS system or you want to work as a fully private dentist. This is extremely important as it will have a huge impact on how your next 20–30 years pans out. There are advantages and disadvantages to both but in order to make this decision, experience in both fields is necessary, initially at least anyway.

Some dentists, don’t like being a clinician and instead become more interested in the management side. They become more interested in having a more business-like approach by buying multiple dental practices.

Once you have your BDS, you are in a fortunate position where you have many options and even if you choose one option, you are not tied with the option forever because it is quite easy to change from one to another.
