A PhD in dentistry can be carried out at any one of the dental teaching hospitals in the UK.

The competition for places to carry out a PhD in dentistry can be quite intense
depending on the actual dental Teaching Hospital and the actual subject you want to research.

PhD can take between 2 to 3 years depending on each Teaching Hospital and how intense you wish to study for the course. Only a very small percentage of dentists, less than 1% will carry out a PhD in dentistry. It is usually those scientists who have an interest in carrying out research or those who will in the long term be working in a dental hospital as a lecturer.

There are also universities in Europe which allow UK candidates to study for a PhD. This can sometimes be cheaper because accommodation and the cost of the course can be less depending on which country you study your PhD. On the negative side, you have to make sure that when you come back, that PhD is of some reputable quality and recognised by the institution that where you eventually want to work in.

Common subjects for PhD dentistry are in restorative, prosthetics and
dental pathology.
