Dave’s Redistricting has released the 2019 American Community Survey Five-Year Estimates for all fifty states and the District of Columbia. The 2019 ACS estimates include total population and citizen voting age population data, and these data have been mapped to 2020 census shapes on DRA 2020.

With the ability to marry 2019 census estimates to 2020 census shapes, organizations and individuals are now one step closer to creating their district maps for the current redistricting cycle, pending the release of 2020 census data later this year. When creating a new map today, a DRA user can select either 2019 Population or Latest Population in Data Selector to build a map with 2019 ACS data. When “Latest” is selected, that map will automatically update to 2020 census data once that data is released and available on DRA 2020. When “2019” is selected, that map will continue to utilize 2019 data, even after 2020 data is available. Of course, a DRA user can at any time change the settings of a particular map to reflect any available dataset.

“We continue to think about new ways to further support redistricting advocacy organizations and individual activists during this period of census data delay, particularly as a number of states face near term constitutional deadlines” said Dave Bradlee, Founder of Dave’s Redistricting. “DRA users can now combine 2020 census shapes with 2019 census estimates. And as we described last month, as soon as official 2020 census data is released, we will make it available on DRA 2020.”

Dave’s Redistricting is a team of volunteers with a shared passion for technology and democracy. Our mission is to empower civic organizations and citizen activists to advocate for fair congressional and legislative districts and increased transparency in the redistricting process.

DRA 2020 is a free web app to create, view, analyze and share redistricting maps for all 50 states and the District of Columbia. DRA 2020 includes extensive election data and demographic data from the 2010 census and 2018 & 2019 Five-Year ACS estimates. Official congressional and state legislative district maps are included and can be used to start new maps, or you can create maps from scratch. DRA 2020 also includes a rich set of analytics, including measures of proportionality, competitiveness, minority representation, compactness, and splitting.
