How to PlanScore

You can use PlanScore to further understand the degree to which a congressional map in DRA 2020 is a partisan gerrymander.

A sample PlanScore analysis

Update: You can still do the process described below manually, but now you get it by simply clicking the PlanScore button in the Bias section of the Advanced tab.

It’s a simple, two-step process:

  • Export it to GeoJSON, and
  • Upload it into PlanScore & score it

Before you start, check the map of the United States on the PlanScore homepage to make sure they support the state for your map.

In DRA

To export GeoJSON for a map in DRA:

  • Open the map
  • Click “Export” on the command bar
  • Select the option “District shapes (as .geojson)” option, to export the geometry of the district shapes
  • Press the “Export” button

The file will be named district-shapes.geojson in your downloads folder — you can rename it, if you like

In PlanScore

Upload the GeoJSON file into PlanScore & score it:

  • Go to PlanScore.org
  • Click on the “Score a Plan” link in the upper right
  • Click on “Choose a File”
  • Find & select the GeoJSON file you just exported from DRA
  • Click on “Score This Plan”
  • In the “Name this plan” field, give your plan a name
  • Click “Score This Plan” (again!)
  • While it is being scored, the browser will display a progress message like this:

Scoring this newly-uploaded plan. 11% complete. Reload this page to see the result.

  • Refresh the browser, until it shows you the analysis for you map (like the example above.

When it is complete, the URL in the address bar is a durable link to the analysis that you can share with others. For example, this is the link to the analysis above:
