With free agency set to open up here in a couple weeks, let’s take a look at the top free agents available at each position.

Quarterbacks:

  1. Dak Prescott
The only true long-term option in free agency, the Cowboys would be foolish to let Dak go. He’s a franchise quarterback who is simply in a bit of a bind. He was coming off a career year when he was injured, making things a bit complicated for everyone. Dak’s price may have to come down a bit due to injury but I don’t think he’ll be willing to budge too much. I expect a very incentive laden contract.
Dak Prescott re-signs with the Dallas Cowboys.
  2. Jameis Winston
The Saints are reportedly in on Winston. How they plan to re-sign him is beyond me. Perhaps they pay him in ownership shares or something, I don’t know how they’re going to do it when they’re this far over the cap. But as teams, usually the Saints, have proven — the cap does not matter. They’re staring at the bottom of the division entering 2021, with Atlanta and Carolina planning a resurgence and Tampa Bay comfortably on top with their new rings. Drew Brees is gone. The premiere quarterback prospects will be gone by their pick and they don’t have the luxury of selling the farm for a guy or taking a risk with a lower-tier QB prospect. Don’t even mention Taysom Hill to me. If they want Winston, then they’re gonna find a way to keep him.
Jameis Winston re-signs with the New Orleans Saints.
  3. Ryan Fitzpatrick
Here is where free agency truly begins. Ryan Fitzpatrick is once again a free agent. He’s leaving behind a team that has a lot to prove and they need to prove it without him. The ultimate journeyman is taking (at least) one more journey. No one, including Fitzpatrick, will delude themselves into thinking he’s a franchise quarterback. But there’s also the problem that he isn’t BAD enough to be a tanking QB so a team looking to ride a wave of sadness to the number one pick next season won’t look his way. He spent last year as a bridge and mentor to Tua Tagovailoa. Prior to his time with the Dolphins, he had the same role with Jameis Winston. It would make a lot of sense for him to go to a team in a similar situation: Denver. Is Drew Lock the guy? Despite a 1–4 record, he finished out the year strong. I’ve never been a Lock fan and I think this experiment ends with Denver in the QB hunt next season but I totally understand why they have to give Lock one more chance.
Ryan Fitzpatrick signs with the Denver Broncos.
  4. Jacoby Brissett
This one is a little hard to project. He’s no longer young but he’s definitely not old yet either. He’s only been given a shot on one occasion and while he wasn’t great — he wasn’t awful either — you do have to wonder if you could get more out of him. I think his best fit is going to be with a team looking to bring in ACTUAL competition. San Francisco and New England are certainly options but I think the team that makes the most sense is Philadelphia. Jalen Hurts did enough to earn the team’s confidence that he’s better than Carson Wentz. But that wasn’t a big obstacle to hurdle. Nick Sarrini is the new head coach and likely wants to ensure he’s got a quarterback. Sarrini was Brissett’s offensive coordinator for three years. A reunion here makes sense.
Jacoby Brissett signs with the Philadelphia Eagles.
  5. Andy Dalton
Is Dallas gonna sign two quarterbacks in one off-season? Would Dalton even want to? He still thinks he can start. The market for starting QBs of his caliber though is…small. I think desperation could make a union out of Dalton and the Patriots. Cam Newton was atrocious last season and yet the Patriots are still picking in the middle of the draft. Could someone better — even if only marginally — put the Patriots back in contention? I don’t think Dalton is going to get any other opportunities to start and I don’t think the Patriots are going to get any other opportunities to get a starter this “good”.
Andy Dalton signs with the New England Patriots.
  6. Mitch Trubisky
There is no reason for Chicago to re-sign Mitch. Unfortunately for him, there isn’t much of a reason for anyone to sign him. He’ll have to get the Marcus Mariota treatment from some team with a fringe-franchise QB who they may decide to move on from in a couple years. That leaves pretty much one option: Minnesota. Kirk Cousins is their guy for the time being but with an absurd cap hit next year, plus an impending free agency, it wouldn’t be the worst idea to bring in a young back-up like Trubisky in case you need him.
Mitch Trubisky signs with the Minnesota Vikings.
  7. Alex Smith
I was in awe of Alex Smith this entire year. I saw an article regarding renaming the award “The Alex Smith Comeback Player of the Year Award”, which I am wholeheartedly in support of. But Smith, soon to be 37, is not a viable starter in the NFL anymore and I don’t think a single team sees him that way. There’s not a lot he can do to improve his legacy as a player but that’s not to say there aren’t opportunities out there for him. Smith has a strong football mind and can offer a lot as a back-up and mentor to a young quarterback. I’m sure you get where I’m going and yes it’s been suggested a lot and it’s low hanging fruit and it’s a little to storybook or whatever but hey, it makes sense.
Alex Smith signs with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
  8. Cam Newton
Can I just copy and paste most of what I just said? Like Smith, Cam is done. His arm is shot, his mobility isn’t what it used to be and at 32, it’s unlikely either are coming back. But a strong armed scrambler wasn’t all there was to him. He’s still CAM. His energy is still electric, his leadership is still strong, he’s still got the charisma that helped make him the first overall pick ten years ago. He’s into the twilight years of his career and the best thing he has to offer now is his experience and guidance. Like Alex Smith, his fit isn’t going to be with a team looking for a starter but a team looking for a mentor. Again, it’s been suggested a lot and it’s low hanging fruit but this prediction is the popular one for a reason.
Cam Newton signs with the Washington Football Team.
  9. Blaine Gabbert
Tampa Bay likes Blaine Gabbert. Jason Licht said he could see Gabbert taking over as QB1 when (or rather, if) Tom Brady finally retires. That’s quite the endorsement, as whoever picks up the ball after Brady is going to have a mountain of expectations and pressure. I don’t see it. I’ve never seen it. But I’m not running the Bucs.
Blaine Gabbert re-signs with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
  10. Tyrod Taylor
The total lack of skill of Gabbert, the departed athleticism of Cam, and the inadvisable post-injury comeback of Alex Smith, Tyrod is permanently relegated to back-up at best territory. I only see two teams in “need” of a player like him at this point in his career. He’s already been with one and the other needs a back-up QB so:
Tyrod Taylor signs with the Arizona Cardinals.

Runningbacks:

  1. Aaron Jones
The Packers took AJ Dillon in the second round of last year’s draft. Of the two pending free agent RBs, it makes more sense for the Packers to pursue Jamaal Williams, who would be a cheaper option and is also one of the most underrated third down backs in the league. Jones is going to get PAID. There are a number of teams who could use a back like him but I think the team that will be the most aggressive in courting him will be the Dolphins. They desperately need to establish a running game to help get the pressure off of Tua and they have the cash to offer Jones whatever he wants. With the Dolphins, presumably, taking a receiver with the third overall pick, the addition of Jones could be enough to get the Dolphins back into the playoffs.
Aaron Jones signs with the Miami Dolphins.
  2. Leonard Fournette
I have no clue how the Buccaneers plan to keep all the players they say they want to keep. Something will have to give. Fournette’s strong finish and draft pedigree will warrant a larger contract than Tampa Bay can comfortably afford. So where does that leave Fournette? It’s hard to say. He’ll be one of the hotter names in a deep RB market, for better or worse. Many teams need an RB1 or RB2 but how many want to shell out the big bucks for one? I think this could come down to who offers the most money. While hard to predict, my mind thinks back to all those rumors in 2017 and a team with a number of RB free agents in need of replacing.
Leonard Fournette signs with the San Francisco 49ers.
  3. Kenyan Drake
Too high on this list? Nah. While his career thus far hasn’t been better than others below him, I do think his best football is ahead of him. If a team can utilize him as a runner like the Cardinals did but get him more involved in the passing game like he was in Miami, he could have a career year and prove to be an essential part of a team’s offense. There are a few teams that could fulfill this for Drake but I think the best fit for him is going to be in black and yellow. Ben Roethlisberger is sticking around, for better or worse, and he NEEDS a strong run game to succeed. He also needs his RB to be able to bail him out in the passing game though and that makes Drake the ideal FA signing for the Steelers.
Kenyan Drake signs with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
  4. James Conner
The touching James Conner story in Pittsburgh looks to be coming to an end. Two years after a monster 12 touchdown season, Conner has regressed each year, finding himself in a tough position if wants to be paid like a premium free agent at his position. He’s still young though and while he may have peaked with his 2017 season, I don’t think a season of similar production is out of question.
James Conner signs with the Arizona Cardinals.
  5. Mark Ingram
A rare instance of a RB being over 30 and still worth an investment, Ingram should have his fair share of suitors. Throughout his career he’s ceded his backfield gracefully to two younger backs so I don’t think money or playing time will be much of a hang-up. Ingram is a leader and a team player and has been a great locker room presence for both the Saints and the Ravens. The one constant seems to be he wants to be with a team that will compete for a title.
Mark Ingram signs with the Seattle Seahawks.
  6. Todd Gurley
A true testament to how rocky a runningbacks career can be, Gurley was seen by many as the best RB in football just a couple years ago. Now he’s coming off his second mediocre season in a row. Not a good time to hit free agency if you’re wanting to be a featured back. However, Gurley won’t turn 27 until the preseason is underway. He’s far from a lost cause. He’s going to want to prove he still has it and likely won’t to stay an RB2 forever so I’d expect him to go to a team that seems primed to draft a RB but can use a veteran bridge.
Todd Gurley signs with the New York Jets.
  7. Chris Carson
The heir apparent to the Lamar Miller “Meh, I Need a RB and Haven’t Drafted One Yet” Award in fantasy football, Carson isn’t the most attractive option but he’s certainly the most underrated one on his list. I’m no scientist but I’m pretty sure you can’t have lightning without thunder. Yeah, that definitely sounds probably right. Carson’s best fit isn’t as a true RB1 but one of the heads in a two headed rushing attack. Personally, I can’t see a better option than the Los Angeles Chargers. Austin Ekeler re-signed with the team but just isn’t as electric when he’s the workhorse back. Adding Carson gives them some missing power while also allowing Ekeler to resume his role as the best change of pace back in the league.
Chris Carson signs with the Los Angeles Chargers.
  8. Le’Veon Bell
Bell bet on himself with the Steelers. It didn’t go great. The Jets bet on Bell. It didn’t go great. The Chiefs picked up Bell. It didn’t go great. Approaching 30, Bell’s prospect are looking, well, not great. But during his time with the Steelers he was arguably the best back in the league, that’s going to count for something. I don’t think a feature role is in his future and instead see him going to a team in the market for a high-upside RB2.
Le’Veon Bell signs with the New York Giants.
  9. Mike Davis
It’s not often you see a RB have a breakout year at age 27 but that’s exactly what Mike Davis did this year while filling in for the injured Christian McCaffrey. Joe Brady’s scheme did wonders for the veteran back, as he set personal bests in almost every category. While CMC will be healthy and playing again by the start of the season, the fear of re-injury still looms large and the Panthers must want to keep some consistency in their backfield should CMC need fewer snaps or to miss time.
Mike Davis re-signs with the Carolina Panthers.
  10. Phillip Lindsay
After signing Melvin Gordon, Lindsay’s role in the offense diminished. He’s still a dynamic playmaker with the ball in his hands, the only trouble was finding time to do so in an offense that is very young and still trying to figure themselves out. This offense has the potential to be loaded if it can stay in one piece. I don’t think the Broncos are going to let Lindsay go without a fight. The first part of that will be tendering Lindsay. I think in the end Lindsay opts to stay within the same metropolitan area he was born, raised, and drafted in.
Phillip Lindsay re-signs with the Denver Broncos.

Others: Adrian Peterson (Baltimore Ravens), Duke Johnson (Tennessee Titans), James White (Tampa Bay Buccaneers), Jamaal Williams (Green Bay Packers), Kyle Juszczyk (San Francisco 49ers), Marlon Mack (Atlanta Falcons), Matt Breida (New England Patriots), Tevin Coleman (Kansas City Chiefs)

Wide Receivers:

  1. Allen Robinson
There is sure to be debate over who is truly the #1 WR free agent and while I don’t think you could go wrong with picking Godwin or Golladay, the pick for me is ARob all the way. Robinson is one of the most consistent and reliable receivers in the league and could arguably be called underrated given how much production he has been able to get out of the worst starting quarterbacks in the league. Robinson is just getting started and is only 27. His best football is ahead of him and he’s going to want to go somewhere where he can not just compete but thrive. If not for having been down this road before, I think the betting favorite for his destination would be Jacksonville. But it’s not a crazy idea. Robinson is still loved in Jax, they need a big threat like him, and if there’s one thing Shad Khan has made clear, it’s that the Jaguars are not going quietly any longer. They made a huge coaching signing — for better or worse — with Urban Meyer, who will now inherit the biggest QB prospect since Andrew Luck. All eyes will be on the Jaguars soon. They’re going to want to give them a show.
Allen Robinson signs with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
  2. Chris Godwin
Not sure why I even bothered to include Chris Godwin here. Is there any chance he doesn’t get the tag?
Chris Godwin re-signs with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
  3. Kenny Golladay
Could this be another Allen Robinson situation where their star receiver gets hurt in a contract year and asks for more than they’re comfortable with giving? Well, there’s no Marqise Lee to stupidly funnel money into. In fact there really isn’t anyone at all. Jared Goff came to Detroit with only Quentez Cephus at WR. Sure, now he has Tyrell Williams, but that’s more like subtraction by addition at this point. Kenny Golladay cannot leave Detroit. Whether they tag him or re-sign him, Goff needs Golladay.
Kenny Golladay re-signs with the Detroit Lions.
  4. Will Fuller
I’m not even going to humor the notion that Will Fuller willingly stays in Houston. Sorry, Texans fans. But also, congratulations. In his five years in the league, Fuller has missed at least three starts every season, including 19 in the last three years. But when he’s on he is ON. He’s still looking to put in a full season of football but you have to imagine he would have a monster season should he finally play 16. There were rumors that Green Bay was in on trading for Fuller during the season but that fizzled out. The rumors connecting Fuller to Green Bay have persisted as free agency looms. Rodgers needs weapons. Please, for fans of football everywhere, give Aaron Rodgers a second receiver.
Will Fuller signs with the Green Bay Packers.
  5. JuJu Smith-Schuster
After exploding onto the scene as a rookie and having an even better sophomore season, JuJu took a step back in his third season. While he improved some and had a better 2020, he still couldn’t replicate the magic of his 2018 outing. JuJu has recently expressed interest in remaining a Steeler and Pittsburgh just cleared up some cap space. Without JuJu, the Steelers still have a couple good options at receiver, but no one who can be consistent on a game to game basis like he can.
JuJu Smith-Schuster re-signs with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
  6. Curtis Samuel
Somehow managing to have both a career year and also leaving some things to be desired, Samuel is in a tough position if he wants to stay in Carolina but also maximize his pay day. Should he stay, he would still have two other receivers plus Christian McCaffrey ahead of him in pecking order. Samuel has an opportunity to go somewhere and be a true starting wide receiver. Maybe not a WR1, but definitely a WR2.
Curtis Samuel signs with the Tennessee Titans.
  7. TY Hilton
Kind of in a rough spot for the Colts. Sure, TY is 31 and in decline. But it’s not like they have an abundance of options waiting in the wings. There’s their latest hype project — Michael Pittman — and their annual “THIS is his year” guy — Parris Campbell — but no true #1 option and no true veteran presence. Hilton hasn’t had a 1,000 yard season since 2018, but he’s got plenty of gas left in the tank for one final run with the team who drafted him.
TY Hilton re-signs with the Indianapolis Colts
  8. Nelson Agholor
It cannot be ignored how good Agholor was with the Raiders. But it also cannot be ignored how bad he was with the Eagles. If he replicates his Vegas season, someone is getting very lucky. If he replicates his Eagles seasons, someone is getting very fired. I’m guessing that Mayock and Gruden will fall for the tale as old as time: player has good season in contract year, gets overpaid, regresses.
Nelson Agholor re-signs with the Las Vegas Raiders.
  9. Marvin Jones
Certainly one of the most underrated receivers in the league, Marvin Jones has 32 touchdowns in the last four seasons. He’s still got plenty left in the tank, but he and the Lions are in different places. The Lions are entering a rebuild while Marvin is staring down the wrong side of 30 and is looking to truly compete for the first time in his career. I think the role he played in Detroit is a great fit for him and he’d be best off as a high upside WR2 on a team with a young group of receivers.
Marvin Jones signs with the Miami Dolphins.
  10. Corey Davis
After a career season, Davis finds himself in an awkward position. Will his draft pedigree demand more money than teams are willing to shell out? There are other receivers of his skillset that will be available for a lower price. You’re betting that Davis’s breakout year is still ahead of him. To be fair, Davis only has seven 100 yard games to his name but five of them came this season. His game has noticeably improved since his rocky rookie season. Davis hasn’t given much indication what he wants so I’m throwing a shot in the dark here.
Corey Davis signs with the Baltimore Ravens.

Others: Allen Lazard (Green Bay Packers), Antonio Brown (Tampa Bay Buccaneers), Dede Westbrook (Washington Football Team), John Ross (Kansas City Chiefs), Josh Reynolds (Detroit Lions), Keelan Cole (Chicago Bears), Larry Fitzgerald (Arizona Cardinals), Sammy Watkins (New York Giants), Tim Patrick (Denver Broncos), Zach Pascal (Indianapolis Colts)

Tight Ends:

  1. Hunter Henry
He’s not part of the Big Three tight ends but he’s right there on the outside looking in. Henry, if healthy, is a dangerous mismatch threat. Another huge bonus: he’s YOUNG. Tight ends are notorious late bloomers. Henry is actually still younger than Travis Kelce was when he became an elite tight end. The future is bright for Henry, especially now that it seems like the Chargers have a franchise quarterback once again in Justin Herbert. Henry is too good to let go and the interest seems mutual.
Hunter Henry re-signs with the Los Angeles Chargers.
  2. Jonnu Smith
After a career high eight touchdowns, Jonnu Smith finds himself with a lot of leverage. The Seahawks have already expressed interest while several other teams likely to be clamoring for what should be the best available tight end on the market. Ultimately, I think the prospect of playing with Russell Wilson will prove too alluring to pass up. While you don’t often think of the Seahawks and tight ends, that’s largely to do with a failure to capitalize on opportunity, not for lack of trying.
Jonnu Smith signs with the Seattle Seahawks.
  3. Rob Gronkowski
Tom Brady is somehow going to keep the band together. Again, cap isn’t real or whatever.
Rob Gronkowski re-signs with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
  4. Robert Tonyan Jr.
I think Aaron Rodgers might actually real life beat up Brian Gutekunst if he lets Robert Tonyan walk. Tonyan had 11 touchdowns last season. He literally had more touchdowns than he had starts. Rodgers is hard up for weapons and his connection with Tonyan was unstoppable at times. This isn’t hard. You have one of the all time greats coming off a MVP season. Keep him happy.
Robert Tonyan Jr. re-signs with the Green Bay Packers.
  5. Jared Cook
Soon to be 34, Cook is still going strong. 2019 saw him set a personal best for touchdowns in a season while 2018 saw him do the same for yards. He can still provide plenty of value to a team in want — but not need — of a tight end.
Jared Cook signs with the Indianapolis Colts.
  6. Mo Alie-Cox
A college basketball player, Alie-Cox only has a couple of years of football under his belt and is coming off his most promising season yet. He’s not a world beater and he doesn’t flash potential to be anything other than a strong TE2 in a vertical offense, but for any team looking to fill that role, they could get a potential steal here.
Mo Alie-Cox signs with the Arizona Cardinals.
  7. Gerald Everett
Entering the draft as one of the most intriguing prospects, Everett hasn’t quite lived up to expectations. The uber-athletic tight end saw his job security dwindle with the emergence of Tyler Higbee but remember what I said about tight ends being late bloomers. Everett is only 26 and could easily have his best football left to play. I think he ends up with a team without a clear TE1.
Gerald Everett signs with the Cincinnati Bengals.
  8. Kyle Rudolph
I know I’ve already made this joke once at Lamar Miller’s expense, but I’ve got to do it again. Forgot to draft a tight end? Who’s left? It’s Kyle Rudolph! We’ve all been there. Some of us more than once. Some of us more than twice. Rudolph is a shell of his former self but can provide valuable veteran leadership and the occasional red zone threat. I think Rudolph will find value in playing for a familiar face, providing valuable leadership to what could develop into a very dangerous tight end duo.
Kyle Rudolph signs with the Cleveland Browns.
  9. Tyler Eifert
Eifert came into the season with a lot to prove. Can he stay healthy? If so, can he return to his former self? He’s been living off his 12 start/13 touchdown performance back in 2015 and I can’t imagine there’s many people out there willing to bet he makes it back to that level ever again. Eifert should be viewed as a TE2 at best for a system that would warrant low expectations.
Tyler Eifert signs with the Tennessee Titans.
  10. Jordan Reed
Finding himself in a similar situation as the two previous players, Reed, like Eifert, is still chasing his elite 2015 season while battling injuries. I don’t expect his list of interested teams to be long, but I think he’ll find a home with a team looking for a depth veteran who still has a little gas left in the tank.
Jordan Reed signs with the Las Vegas Raiders.

Offensive Tackles:

  1. Trent Williams
After a dismal end to his tenure with Washington, Williams had himself a decent rebound in San Francisco. While poised to be one of the premiere free agents, I’m not certain that he makes it quite that far. The 49ers want Williams back and the feeling appears to be mutual. Williams has spoke on wanting to be on a team that is ready to contend right now and, given his confidence in the 49ers roster, it would make a ton of sense for him to remain with the team that took a chance on him following his fallout with Washington.
Trent Williams re-signs with the San Francisco 49ers.
  2. Taylor Moton
The Panthers offensive line is in disrepair. Worse yet, only one starter remains under contract. So not only do they have a line that suffered from poor play in 2020, they’ll likely have a line featuring as many as four new starters in 2021. That, for what could end up being a rookie quarterback, is a recipe for disaster. The Panthers absolutely cannot afford to let Moton walk. The price could end up being an overpay, but the alternative is bleak.
Taylor Moton re-signs with the Carolina Panthers.
  3. Daryl Williams
The Bills have been getting closer and closer to making a real run at a championship. They’re too close to shake things up by letting their stud right tackle walk.
Darryl Williams re-signs with the Buffalo Bills.
  4. Alejandro Villanueva
The last train leaving the station, Villanueva is the best you’ll be able to get at left tackle on the open market. There are plenty of teams that need an upgrade at left tackle but not so many that are in the same stage of their franchise as Villanueva. He’s getting up there in age and likely won’t be playing for too much longer. If he’s looking to win, he’ll be looking to win immediately.
Alejandro Villanueva signs with the Indianapolis Colts.
  5. Cam Robinson
A second round pick by the Jaguars in the 2017 Draft, Robinson never lived up to his hype and instead proved to be a lot of what his college game was criticized for: blind power, inconsistency, and lack of discipline. At only 25, it’s possible he still hasn’t peaked, but I don’t think Jacksonville is going to keep being patient with him. It might also be time to move him to right tackle or guard.
Cam Robinson signs with the Washington Football Team.
  6. Russell Okung
Desperate for a left tackle, the Panthers traded away Trai Turner for Russell Okung. The results were…fine. Not enough to justify his very hefty price tag. While I don’t think Okung is going to demand the same money this time around, I don’t think the Panthers are going to want to keep a stopgap at left tackle, especially since all signs point to them taking their QB of the future in the draft. Let the rebuild begin. Okung meanwhile pretty much only fits with a team looking to win in 2021.
Russell Okung signs with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
  7. Cameron Fleming
Fleming was tasked with playing the veteran mentor to Matt Peart this season but things didn’t go entirely as planned. Peart, who was seen as a raw prospect, came on a lot stronger than anticipated. The Giants can comfortably move forward with Peart starting at right tackle, which means Fleming is going to be finding a new home this off-season. Fleming isn’t young but he’s still on the right side of 30. He should have a decently active market and I ultimately think he’ll end up with one of the teams currently flushed with cash.
Cameron Fleming signs with the Denver Broncos.
  8. Ricky Wagner
Wagner’s time in Green Bay was short-lived. After signing a two year deal in 2019, he found himself a cap casualty just one year later. Nearing 32 and no longer the player he once was, his options are going to be limited and he likely won’t see many more years as a starter. I imagine he’ll fit into a role similar to Cameron Fleming’s with the Giants. It makes a lot of sense for Wagner to go back to where it all began and serve as a mentor to whatever right tackle the Ravens choose to replace Orlando Brown in the long term. I know Brown is still with the team, but all signs point to him being traded.
Ricky Wagner signs with the Baltimore Ravens.

Interior Offensive Line:

  1. Joe Thuney
Sure to be a hot commodity, Thuney will likely have close to 20 teams calling for him, though only a few can compete with the Bengals in terms of cap space. Cincy picked Joe Burrow first overall last season after the greatest single season for a quarterback in college football history. Burrow looked as good as advertised but his rookie season was cut short due to injury. The Bengals offensive line is abysmal. They could take five offensive linemen with their first five picks and be completely justified in doing so. But they have other needs to fill too. Thuney is one of the top free agents available and immediately fills one of the Bengals biggest needs. They have more than enough room to overpay Thuney too. I can’t see any team matching what the Bengals (should) give up.
Joe Thuney signs with the Cincinnati Bengals.
  2. Brandon Scherff
Ron Rivera came in and instantly turned the Washington Football Team around. Sure, 7–9 isn’t exactly a dominant team but they played the eventual Super Bowl champs very well despite having no quarterback to speak of. Their offensive line is below average to begin with. Brandon Scherff leaving would prove fatal to a team that is looking to improve on their unexpected success. With Washington in the hunt for a QB, a WR2, most of an offensive line, and a secondary, I cannot imagine they’d like to add another big hole to their roster.
Brandon Scherff re-signs with the Washington Football Team
  3. Corey Linsley
Linsley has been a surprise success for the Packers over the years but it seems like neither party expects he’ll suit up as a Packer this season. This is likely due to the emergence as Elgton Jenkins as a solid center. Linsley will have a healthy market though and I expect him to be one of the first names we hear about moving teams. With Ted Karras’s impending free agency, we’ve been seeing a lot of talk that Miami will scoop up Linsley. Personally, wouldn’t surprise me to see Karras stick around with the Dolphins. But I do think Linsley will be protecting a sophomore quarterback come next season.
Corey Linsley signs with the Los Angeles Chargers.
  4. Austin Blythe
After playing one a prove it deal this year, Blythe has earned himself a vote of confidence. I don’t think the Rams are going to think twice about re-signing their center. They invested heavily in Matthew Stafford and are not settling for anything short of the Lombardi Trophy. Losing one of your top linemen is a surefire way to throw a wrench into that momentum. I don’t think Sean McVay and Les Snead will let that happen.
Austin Blythe re-signs with the Los Angeles Rams.
  5. Alex Mack
He’s not done yet but 2021 should be Mack’s swan song. The legendary center contemplated retirement but decided against it. Usually, people considering retirement aren’t choosing between retiring and playing for several more seasons. The possible Hall-of-Famer will be picking his destination carefully and I can’t imagine he’ll be rushing to join a team outside of contention. He’s already name dropped one team, which would be a fun match, so I’m gonna roll with it.
Alex Mack signs with the San Francisco 49ers.
  6. Dan Feeney
With Pouncey retiring and Trai Turner actively being shopped, you have to wonder if the Chargers would really risk having no continuity on their offensive line. Yes, they were bottom three last season but starting with five new players on the OL seems a bit risky. Plus, Feeney’s versatility is an asset. I don’t think Feeney was the problem with the Chargers OL and I expect him to remain blocking for Herbert, albeit on the right side this time.
Dan Feeney re-signs with the Los Angeles Chargers.
  7. Ted Karras
People are already packing Karras’s bags for him. I’m not sure why. If you were to pinpoint Miami’s offensive line woes, Karras would probably be the last person you would be assigning blame to. No, he isn’t an elite center. But following a solid season and still relatively young, I don’t think it makes a lot of sense to get rid of the heart and soul of your offensive line just because you (i.e. the fans) want to try and do better at the position.
Ted Karras re-signs with the Miami Dolphins.
  8. David Andrews
Andrews spent 2019 on IR, which allowed for then-backup Karras to play himself into a starting role with Miami this season. Andrews bounced back from his injury but now finds himself a free agent. The Patriots offense is in the midst of an exodus, having lost at least one major player on offense every year for the last couple seasons. Andrews is one of the veteran leaders on the team and I can’t imagine Belichick is gonna let him walk.
David Andrews re-signs with the New England Patriots.
  9. Nick Martin
Cursed with being related to the (at the time) best guard in football, Nick Martin failed to live up to the same standards as his older brother. Now that he’s free from the Texans, he finds himself in a similar situation to Ted Karras where he must first prove himself worthy of a long term deal. Wherever he goes, I expect it to be a one-year contract.
Nick Martin signs with the New York Giants.
  10. Gabe Jackson
In an effort to make some cap space, Jackson has ended up as a cap casualty for the Raiders. I’m not quite sure what is behind the move considering they’ve ruled out trading for Russell Wilson or Deshaun Watson. Jackson tends to miss a couple games a season but played all 16 this season and wasn’t bad. He’ll turn 30 this year but I don’t think he’s done being an above average starter at right guard.
Gabe Jackson signs with the Carolina Panthers.

Others: Cameron Erving (Houston Texans), Forrest Lamp (Green Bay Packers), Kelechi Osemele (New England Patriots)

Interior Defensive Line:

  1. Leonard Williams
After an underwhelming stint with the Jets, where he did not live up to his draft hype, Williams found a new home…in the same building. Turns out, blue and white suits him better than green and white. One of the youngest players in his draft class, Williams will enter the 2021 season at only 27 years old after coming off a career year. The Giants are in a strange spot where they are picking 11th but also almost made the playoffs due to the laughability of their division. Leonard Williams was a major part of that almost-playoff run.
Leonard Williams re-signs with the New York Giants.
  2. Dalvin Tomlinson
Tomlinson has moved around the defensive line a couple of times in his career before his full potential was unleashed by new defensive coordinator Patrick Graham. The premier run defender in this free agent class, Tomlinson is going to have a lot of teams calling after him. However, only one can match need with cash.
Dalvin Tomlinson signs with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
  3. Shelby Harris
If you’re thinking he’s too high, I’m thinking you aren’t watching enough of him. Harris’s contributions are not on a stat sheet you can just google real quick. He’s one of the best run defenders in the league and possesses a strong pass rushing presence as well. The caveat is he’s 30 years old with only 33 starts to his name. Late bloomer or not, his talent can’t be denied. I doubt that his journey keeps him in Denver though.
Shelby Harris signs with the Carolina Panthers.
  4. Denico Autry
After two career seasons in the last three, Autry has a big decision on his hands. At 31 once the season starts, Autry isn’t going to be as sought after as some of his peers at the position. Which is a shame because he had a very good year with the Colts, whose defensive line took a major leap forward and became quite formidable. Justin Houston’s price tag is likely going to be too rich for Indy, considering his pedigree and production last year, but I don’t think the Colts want to blow it up completely. Autry earned himself an extension and I think the Colts would be smart to give it to him.
Denico Autry re-signs with the Indianapolis Colts.
  5. Ndamukong Suh
Discussing whether or not Ndamukong Suh is ready to call it a career or not is a real bummer and makes me feel old, relative to the NFL, for the first time. I remember growing up watching him dominate on what would go on to be the last good Nebraska team. It was genuinely unfair how good he was versus his competition. That dominance followed him to the NFL, though it’s more of a distant memory at this point. Described by many as a mercenary, Suh has become a journeyman at defensive tackle, a strange distinction for a player that still possesses a lot of talent but it’s worked for him. Continuing that trend, I see Suh signing on with another contender that has a Suh-sized opening.
Ndamukong Suh signs with the Cleveland Browns.
  6. Larry Ogunjobi
The first ever Charlotte Niner to get draft, Ogunjobi’s story has been more compelling than his play. He hasn’t quite lived up to his potential, despite being in a rather favorable situation to do so. That usually screams “change of scenery”. A team in desperate need for a DT might look for more of a sure thing but a team that can afford to sign a guy still developing that can provide some solid upside as an interior rusher.
Larry Ogunjobi signs with the Minnesota Vikings.
  7. Kawaan Short
A testament to how quickly your career can turn around in the NFL, Short went from one of the best DTs in the league to a cap casuality after playing only five games in two years. At his age, that’s an enormous red flag, but one that teams will ignore in favor of remembering just how good he could be when healthy. I don’t think a starting gig is in Short’s future any longer. His healthy has relegated him to a rotational role instead. Which actually makes him fit even better with these guys, given their talent at defensive tackle and Short’s familiarity with the coach and scheme.
Kawaan Short signs with the Buffalo Bills.
  8. Jurrell Casey
His first season away from the Titans didn’t go as planned. Casey only played three games before suffering a season ending injury. Casey will need to have a strong comeback season if he wants to see a somewhat long-term deal again. His prime is behind him but if he can pick up where he left off in 2019, whoever signs him will be happy. Jurrell Casey signs with the New England Patriots.
  9. Lawrence Guy
Guy provides great value to the Patriots defense both in the passing game and (especially) as a run defender. He’s earned himself an upgrade over his expiring 4y/20m contract but I could see him taking a bit of a discount to remain in New England.
Lawrence Guy re-signs with the New England Patriots.
  10. Jonathan Hankins
Once an elite run stopper, Hankins entered a sharp decline and hasn’t been the same these last couple of seasons. Any team taking him is sure to be signing him to a short, cheap deal in hopes of the old Hankins resurfacing. Funny enough, I think that team is the one he’s on currently. Jonathan Hankins re-signs with the Las Vegas Raiders.

Others: Abry Jones (Detroit Lions), Christian Covington (Green Bay Packers), Corey Peters (Arizona Cardinals), DaQuan Jones (Tennessee Titans), Davon Godchaux (Dallas Cowboys), Derek Wolfe (Chicago Bears), Mario Edwards (Los Angeles Chargers), Sheldon Rankins (Philadelphia Eagles), Tyson Alualu (Pittsburgh Steelers)

Edge:

  1. Shaquill Barrett
“Your ass ain’t going anywhere” — Bruce Arians.
Shaquill Barrett re-signs with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
  2. Von Miller
One of only three defensive players to win Super Bowl MVP in the last 20 years, Von Miller has been the face of the Denver Broncos since he was taken second overall in 2011. Voin is coming off a down season. He failed to log at least ten sacks for just the second time in his career. But with the injuries to the Broncos and inconsistent defense, it’s not hard to see why Von struggled some this season. He’s still got it though. Maybe not the elite pass rusher he used to be. Maybe not a 14+ sack guy anymore but he can definitely match the eight he recorded this season.
Von Miller re-signs with the Denver Broncos.
  3. Yannick Ngakoue
Yan has been passed around over the last year. First falling out with the Jaguars before being traded to the Vikings, who traded him to the Ravens soon after. He proved he can be an eight sack guy in three different systems in a short amount of time. It’s hard to argue that Yan hasn’t earned his long term deal. I would expect this team to be the frontrunner regardless of coaching hire but with Robert Saleh in New York and his familiarity with Yannick, the Jets make the most sense.
Yannick Ngakoue signs with the New York Jets.
  4. Bud Dupree
Dupree has a career season in 2019 and looked to be well on the way to topping in this year before tearing his ACL. This is just about the worst position a free agent can be in, considering there is not only concern for his overall healthy but now his availability for the season opener. Dupree was watching his new cap number get bigger and bigger but now he may have to settle for a shorter deal centered around proving he still has it.
Bud Dupree re-signs with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
  5. Melvin Ingram
Once an elite pass rusher, Ingram has taken a step back as of late. I know the popular opinion is that Ingram is leaving in free agency and while he could definitely receive a lucrative offer that proves too much to decline, I think Brandon Staley’s scheme is a terrific fit for Ingram and the Chargers are very much in play to retain Ingram. It’s a coin flip for me. I think Staley could get enough out of Ingram to return him to his Mike McCoy days [Remember Mike McCoy? Wild, right?) but he’s not alone in that fact.
Melvin Ingram signs with the Miami Dolphins.
  6. Matthew Judon
The two-time Pro Bowler remains open to returning to Baltimore, though it sounds unlikely to happen. Judon will probably take the biggest offer that comes his way, though maybe giving some weight towards competing sooner rather than later. Whether Judon is aware or not, I believe most coaches will know that part of Judon’s success is tied to Baltimore’s scheme. I think the money he’s offered will be about what he expects, but the list of callers will be small, as he doesn’t fit with a lot of teams. That said, if his best fit is Baltimore, but the Ravens aren’t offering him the most money, there is still one team out there that runs that scheme.
Matthew Judon signs with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
  7. Carl Lawson
Unsung hero of the Bengals defense and one of the most underrated players at his position, Lawson’s stats don’t pop off the page but anyone who watches him can tell you he’s one of the most impactful players in Cincinnati. I cannot fathom a situation where Cincinnati lets Lawson get away from them.
Carl Lawson re-signs with the Cincinnati Bengals.
  8. Jadeveon Clowney
The former first overall pick is on the hunt for his fourth team in as many years. He was looking for $20m/AAV this time last season. He got a prove it deal for $13m. That didn’t go so hot as he appeared in only eight games and racked up a total of zero sacks. Still, his athleticism when healthy cannot be denied. His incredible mix of size and speed, a huge part of what made him the first overall pick, cannot be denied. At only 28, I expect to see Clowney on year another one year deal as he proves he can stay healthy. With an impending contract extension for Lamar Jackson, the Ravens are looking to strike now. The departures of both Yannick Ngakoue and Matthew Judon hurt but Clowney can potentially that missing piece for Baltimore.
Jadeveon Clowney signs with the Baltimore Ravens.
  9. Leonard Floyd
This one isn’t rocket science. Leonard Floyd just had himself a career year in Los Angeles under Brandon Staley. With Melvin Ingram now on the opposite side of the country, they’ve got a hole to fill and Staley has proven to get the most out of Floyd. Not a hard decision for him to make as he trades in blue and yellow for, well, a better blue and a better yellow.
Leonard Floyd signs with the Los Angeles Chargers.
  10. Trey Hendrickson
Hendrickson got himself PAID this year. After just 6.5 sacks in his first three seasons, he exploded this year with 13.5 sacks. That, while impressive, is still a cause for concern. A one year wonder in a contract year is bound to raise a couple concerns. I’m sure we all remember 2015 Vic Beasley. He’s young and still got his best football ahead of him. I think his best fit is going to be somewhere similar to his situation in New Orleans — pass rusher #2. When you’re starting opposite someone like Cameron Jordan, you’re gonna get some opportunities.
Trey Hendrickson signs with the Cleveland Browns.

Others: Alex Okafor (Atlanta Falcons),Dawuane Smoot (Las Vegas Raiders), Everson Griffen (New England Patriots), Justin Houston (Buffalo Bills), Olivier Vernon (New York Jets), Romeo Okwara (Detroit Lions), Ryan Kerrigan (Tennessee Titans), Shaquem Griffin (Chicago Bears), Solomon Thomas (Dallas Cowboys), Trent Murphy (Los Angeles Rams), Vic Beasley (Miami Dolphins)

Linebackers:

  1. Lavonte David
After winning a Super Bowl, David is set to hit free agency. The Buccaneers have a LOT of free agents. There’s no way they’re able to keep all of them and David seems well aware of that. While he is the cornerstone of that defense and the teams longest tenured player, what he’s worth might not be able to match what the Buccaneers can afford. The Browns are the popular team to make a run at David and while I think they can certainly afford it, I think one team and one coach in particular will be able to draw David away from Cleveland. With all four starters set to hit free agency and a scheme change, the Jets are desperate for a player like David, who would excel under Robert Saleh’s scheme. Throw him next to CJ Mosley, who is hopefully fully healthy and ready to pick up where he left off in Baltimore, and the Jets instantly have a very formidable defense.
Lavonte David signs with the New York Jets.
  2. Matt Milano
You could definitely say that Milano is the best free agent linebacker. I wouldn’t agree but I wouldn’t argue either. David’s age is a knock against him while Milano is still 26. While a stud for the Bills, he plays a position that is expendable for McDermott. The amount of money Milano will warrant is too much to justify keeping Milano long term. Though I know of a former teacher of McDermott’s with money to spare and a need for Milano’s talents.
Matt Milano signs with the Washington Football Team.
  3. Jayon Brown
After what I said about the Browns, you can probably assume the direction I’m going with this one. The Browns need help at LB. Jacob Phillips had a solid rookie season and Sione Takitaki has shown some promise. Mack Wilson has proven to be nothing more than an off the bench guy though. He’s an absolute liability on the field as a starter and Cleveland’s top priority this free agency should be addressing that.
Jayon Brown signs with the Cleveland Browns.
  4. Denzel Perryman
An astute run defender but a so-so pass defender, Perryman is likely not going to see the Chargers transition to a new defensive scheme first hand. Perryman is not an all the time three down player and instead just a two down thumper. While that isn’t ideal, what Perryman does well, he does very well. He’s still relatively young and can provide value to a team looking to get better against the run.
Denzel Perryman signs with the Carolina Panthers.
  5. Haason Reddick
Seen as a huge reach when he was drafted, most of us had already written Reddick off coming into the 2020 season. He had underperformed each season since being drafted in 2017 and I expected 2020 to be no different. But different it was. Reddick had a huge breakout year, tallying 12.5 sacks and drastically improving his efficiency as a tackler. So what now? Reddick rides off into the sunset with a big bag of cash from some other team? I don’t think so.
Haason Reddick re-signs with the Arizona Cardinals.
  6. Jarrad Davis
After coming on strong in his sophomore season, Davis missed five games in 2019 and was benched in 2020, starting only four games. He certainly has not lived up to expectations but he still has potential. Dan Campbell seems to think so. With the way Campbell has been talking about Davis, the way Davis has been talking about the Lions, and how there’s pretty much no way anyone is going to break the bank for him, I think it’s safe to call this one.
Jarrad Davis re-signs with the Detroit Lions.
  7. Avery Williamson
Williamson has a nose for the football. He’s always finding ways to get himself involved in the play and you’ll frequently see him making the tackle, if not then around where the tackle was made. That’s not always a good thing however, as that can also be an indicator of inconsistent coverage ability. But if you’re looking for a tackle artist this late in the game, you aren’t going to do any better.
Avery Williamson signs with the Philadelphia Eagles.
  8. Anthony Walker
It looks like Walker is going to enter free agency, although a return to the Colts is not out of the question. His chemistry with Darius Leonard and understanding of Eberflus’s scheme are two very solid selling points. But with their spending thus far — and I’m not done — in addition to future contracts that need to be given out next season, Walker is likely to be the odd man out here. I don’t know how they find the space to sign him but I think they’ll look to make a signing around this level. They need a linebacker pretty bad. Anthony Walker signs with the Green Bay Packers.
  9. Nick Vigil
Coming in from the Bengals on a one year deal, Vigil proved himself worthy of being re-signed by the Chargers. Problem is the Chargers aren’t the same team he signed with a year ago. He doesn’t mesh as well with this new scheme as he did in Gus Bradley’s.
Nick Vigil signs with the Las Vegas Raiders.
  10. KJ Wright
A model of consistency throughout his time in Seattle, Wright actually had two of best seasons in 2019 and 2020. He’s clearly got a lot left in the tank, which could be trouble for the Seahawks financially. If you believe that the Seahawks are trading Russell Wilson, you might be inclined to think Wright packs his bags and finds a smarter team to play for. Good news in that case for Wright, there would be 31 to choose from. But I don’t think Russell Wilson is getting the boot out of town.
KJ Wright re-signs with the Seattle Seahawks.

Others: Christian Kirksey (Dallas Cowboys), De’Vondre Campbell (Arizona Cardinals) Elandon Roberts (Miami Dolphins), Kamu Grugier-Hill (San Francisco 49ers), Kyle Van Noy (New England Patriots), Kyler Fackrell (Los Angeles Rams), Raekwon McMillan (Buffalo Bills), Reggie Ragland (Tennessee Titans), Sean Lee (Retirement), Tahir Whitehead (Denver Broncos)

Cornerbacks:

  1. JC Jackson
I loved this guy coming out. I will not claim I thought he would turn into one of the best corners in the NFL. I had him projected as an eventual strong CB2 and was looking for his name starting in the fourth round. My jaw was on the floor when he went undrafted. Whether or not Stephon Gilmore remains a Patriot, JC Jackson needs to be their top priority.
JC Jackson re-signs with the New England Patriots.
  2. William Jackson
Despite never quite reaching the highs of his elite sophomore season, William Jackson has still been a cornerstone of the Bengals defense. His youth and untapped potential is enticing but the number one reason William Jackson must be re-signed is simply because this Bengals team MUST move forward. Mike Brown isn’t going to fire himself — though the subsequent celebration could be heard in space — but Zac Taylor’s seat could not be any hotter. Getting Burrow protection only to make his defense worse is not the route they want to take.
William Jackson re-signs with the Cincinnati Bengals.
  3. Desmond King
I love Desmond King’s game, even if it’s been a little inconsistent as of late. He’s still young and one of the best nickels in the game. I could go on but I feel like Kevin Stefanski himself may bust in here to finish this for me. The Cleveland Browns are in desperate need for a slot corner.
Desmond King signs with the Cleveland Browns.
  4. Richard Sherman
It’s always great to see players bet on themselves and win. Sherman returned to a high level of play in San Francisco, thanks to a perfect fit in Robert Saleh’s scheme. With Saleh departing to be the head coach of the New York Jets, you have to wonder if Sherman follows him out there. The team can certainly afford to throw money at him and his fit is undeniable. Some may view the Jets as too far out of contention for a competitor like Sherman but things can turn around in the NFL in an instant. The Jets have been laughing stocks in the NFL for years but look at what the Jets have going for them right now: cap space, premier head coaching hire, three young All-Pro level players, and a plethora of picks over the next two seasons including second overall this year. The future is bright and Sherman is the perfect veteran to help lead that team into the new era of Jets football.
Richard Sherman signs with the New York Jets.
  5. Troy Hill
A serviceable outside corner for a number of years with the Rams, Hill put himself on the map this season as a dynamic slot corner. Hill’s versatility will be his biggest selling point but if you’re buying stock in Hill, it’s because of his stellar 2020 outing as the Rams CB3. A team needing both a veteran presence and a slot corner can kill two birds with one stone. Troy Hill signs with the New York Giants.
  6. Xavier Rhodes
The Colts bet on Rhodes returning to the high level of play he displayed in Minnesota and they bet right. Colts fans are calling for Rhodes to be re-signed but everything indicates he’ll be taking his talents elsewhere. I don’t suspect a long-term deal, but a two-year lucrative deal in which Rhodes serves as a veteran mentor to a younger secondary seems like the best fit for him. Xavier Rhodes signs with the Denver Broncos.
  7. Jason Verrett
God I love Jason Verrett. He is an absolute blast to watch when he’s healthy. I really do cherish those two weeks every year. His injury history is too extensive to bet on him with a big contract. But he’s coming off the second best season of his career and the 49ers are left with virtually nothing at cornerback heading into next season. Verrett needs the 49ers almost as much as they need him. Let’s just hope he can stay healthy. Jason Verrett re-signs with the San Francisco 49ers.Chidobe Awuzie
  8. Mike Hilton
A versatile corner capable of thwarting defenses with man or zone coverage, from the slot or outside, Hilton is the rare instance of the Steelers doing something right at cornerback. Many busts and failed experiments have suited up in black and yellow over the years. The Steelers restructured Big Ben in hopes of getting him one more ring. Starting from scratch at corner is counter productive to that goal. Mike Hilton re-signs with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
  9. Shaquill Griffin
One of the Griffin twins, their story was one of the most heartwarming of their draft cycle. Now, they could potentially find themselves playing on different teams for the first time in their lives. Shaq didn’t come on strong but he’s developed into a solid corner over the last two seasons. I don’t know where they’ll find the money for this but I feel like they’ll make it happen in order to focus their attention elsewhere in the draft. Shaquill Griffin signs with the Dallas Cowboys.
  10. Patrick Peterson
The end is near. Peterson has been in decline for the last two seasons and his most recent outing was downright ugly. The former elite corner is simply no longer what he used to be. The Cardinals are reportedly still in on PP, and vice-versa. The Cardinals are gearing up for their run at a title. Larry Fitzgerald is back for one more. You can say there’s no loyalty in the NFL if you’d like but if the Cardinals and Peterson are still mutually interested after the year he just had, it’s because they want him to be a part of this run, even if mostly from the bench.
Patrick Peterson re-signs with the Arizona Cardinals.

Others: Ahkello Witherspoon (New York Jets), AJ Bouye (Tennessee Titans), Brian Poole (Carolina Panthers), Cameron Sutton (Chicago Bears), Dre Kirkpatrick (Los Angeles Rams), Jourdan Lewis (Atlanta Falcons), Kevin Johnson (Minnesota Vikings), Nickell Robey-Coleman (Cincinnati Bengals), Ronald Darby (New England Patriots), Sidney Jones (Jacksonville Jaguars) Tre Herndon (Buffalo Bills), Vernon Hargreaves (Houston Texans)

Safeties:

  1. Justin Simmons
Denver beat me to the punch with this one but it’s not like it was a surprise.
Justin Simmons re-signs with the Denver Broncos.
  2. Marcus Maye
The Jets shipped off Jamal Adams for a haul of picks and they don’t seem to be missing him much. Maye took a strong step forward this year and is their anchor in the secondary. Whether it be a long-term deal or a franchise tag, I suspect Marcus Maye will remain with the Jets for 2021.
Marcus Maye re-signs with the New York Jets.
  3. Anthony Harris
While he didn’t have the best 2020 season, Harris has still been excellent for the Vikings. While he isn’t the best safety in Minnesota with “Harris” in his name, he’s earned himself a big pay day this year. There are few teams that could better utilize his talents than the Colts, who conveniently have an opening starting safety role. Eberflus loves playing two high, where Harris has excelled under Zimmer.
Anthony Harris signs with the Indianapolis Colts.
  4. Marcus Williams
While remembered for the infamous playoff loss to Minnesota, Williams has actually been one of the best free safeties in the league over the last few seasons. Along with Jameis Winston, the Saints are making it their top priority to keep Williams in New Orleans. I have no clue how they intend to do that but through science or magic, I’m sure they’ll find a way to defy the cap and keep one of their best defensive players.
Marcus Williams re-signs with the New Orleans Saints.
  5. John Johnson III
While I’m a fan of John Johnson and think he’s very good, I expect a team to go out of their way to get him and end up overpaying him. He’s versatile, intelligent, and consistent. Whoever signs him is getting a slam dunk of a player who has been one of the best members of the Rams elite defense. The Rams have known this day will come though. I don’t think a team drafting three safeties in two years is going to break their bank for another safety.
John Johnson III signs with the Las Vegas Raiders.
  6. Keanu Neal
I have concerns for Neal’s health, but when he’s at 100% he can be a menace for opposing defenses. But those concerns are very valid, considering Neal has missed 29 games in the last three seasons. I think he’s going to bet on himself this year and sign a one-year prove-it sort of deal.
Keanu Neal signs with the Baltimore Ravens.
  7. Malik Hooker
Injuries have derailed his career so far but he’s still very young. Roll your eyes at the Urban connection if you want, but I don’t suspect many teams are going to be throwing out long term offers with Hooker’s health still up in the air. But Urban Meyer is a big fan of his. He was his college coach and speaks very highly of his character. Free safety is an enormous need for the Jags and Hooker’s youth and potential is well worth taking the bet on.
Malik Hooker signs with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
  8. Xavier Woods
The Cowboys got themselves a steal with Xavier Woods. His versatility translated positively to the NFL and while his coverage does leave some to be desired, he generally been solid throughout his career. I didn’t think Woods was going to be a good fit with the Cowboys and expected him to go into free agency but I actually really like his fit with Dan Quinn and think the Cowboys will try and make this work because of that.
Xavier Woods re-signs with the Dallas Cowboys.
  9. Tre Boston
Boston is becoming a journeyman at safety after being released by the Panthers. At this point, you know exactly what you’re going to get from Boston: a solid veteran presence from a player that is best suited as a third safety.
Tre Boston signs with the Kansas City Chiefs.
  10. Jalen Mills
Mills has been an utter frustration to watch. Some of that isn’t his fault though. Mills was always very clearly a square peg being shoved in a round hole. His skillset is best served as a deep safety, not a man corner. He had a career season with the Eagles this year after making the full time switch. Due to past struggles and inexperience at the position, I think a team can squeeze out a pretty modest deal from Mills. Jalen Mills signs with the Minnesota Vikings

Others: Bradley McDougald (Houston Texans), Jaquiski Tartt (Jacksonville Jaguars), Karl Joseph (San Francisco 49ers), Ricardo Allen (Cincinnati Bengals), Tashaun Gipson (Carolina Panthers),
