Hong Kong dragon boat races go mobile

In 2018, the Hong Kong China Dragon Boat Association published all official race results on mobile app, in real-time.

Participants saved many thousand trips to the scoreboard, which could be a mile away from their tent on the riverside. Officials no longer have to wait for a piece of paper to delivered, to know which team should be on which lane for semi-finals and finals. Everything is searchable on a mobile app.

Updated race-by-race, every 5~6 minutes

There were typically 30 to 50 races in a day. The interval between races was only 5 to 6 minutes.

In the past, officials in charge of results calculation had to spent a lot of time printing up to 9 copies of results to post at different spots along the riverside.

Also, they had to print start-list of subsequent semi-final and finals, based on results of the current race. Multiple copies of these would then have to be delivered to various official posts along the river.

With data instantly available on mobile app, the reliance of paper was drastically reduced. Participants and officials can instantly look up results of past races, or lineup of upcoming races on the mobile app.

Save thousands of trips to the scoreboard

In the past, large crowd of people would wait in front of the scoreboard, trying to read through the fine-print. Today, people can be planning and strategizing their next race in a cafe or restaurant between races.

In the old days, people make trips to see results on a scoreboard. Today, all race data are available on mobile app.
