When it comes to traveling, what camera should you bring along? Some suggest using just a smartphone, others advocate for a full set of lenses, while some stand by a single lens for the entire trip. Even I spend considerable time contemplating this before each trip. This piece aims to condense my thoughts into key points to help you make faster decisions.

Purpose of Travel

First and foremost, it’s crucial to clarify the purpose of your journey. Some travel to capture stunning photographs and arm themselves with complete gear. Others travel for work, needing professional-grade photos, lugging around hefty equipment. However, for most, travel is about relaxation, capturing joyous and astonishing moments. Therefore, your camera shouldn’t burden you; consider your physical capacity as a primary concern.

Assessing the Intensity of Your Itinerary

Evaluate how much weight you usually carry when out and about. How long can you comfortably carry that weight? Understanding your physical limits helps in choosing a camera of the corresponding weight. Additionally, consider the mode of transportation during your trip. If there’s a lot of walking or hiking, opt for a lightweight camera. If there’s more reliance on vehicles, a slightly heavier camera might be manageable.

Choosing the Focal Length

Fear of not bringing the right focal length before a trip and realizing afterward that many focal lengths were unnecessary — how do you judge?

Stick to Familiar Focal Lengths

Your accustomed focal lengths will never go wrong. It’s the perspective you usually observe things from. Recall your usual focal lengths when taking photos with your smartphone: 0.5x is about 13mm equivalent, 1x is around 26mm, 2x is roughly 50mm, 3x is approximately 80mm, 5x is about 130mm… My most frequent focal length is around 50mm equivalent, so I often bring lenses close to that focal length or use the 2x lens on my iPhone.

Referencing Sightseeing Photos

Search for photos of the destinations you plan to visit. Rather than immediately checking the aperture or focal length, identify your favorite photos. Analyze the atmosphere, colors, or elements that attract you in those photos. Further, contemplate whether the focal length truly matters for capturing similar photos. For instance, at the Antelope Canyon in the USA, many beautiful photos were taken with an ultra-wide-angle lens. However, our guide quickly snapped some beautiful shots using our smartphone at 1x. At the Horseshoe Bend, an ultra-wide-angle lens was necessary as the area was vast; 28mm alone couldn’t capture the entire scene. Not every location is restricted by focal lengths; some research beforehand helps.

Carrying High-Zoom Lenses

Is it good to carry lenses like 28–200mm, 24–105mm, or 18–300mm? Absolutely! When unsure about the best focal length, these high-zoom lenses are the easiest, brainless choice. Ensure you can handle the weight; they are usually not compact. Perhaps many veterans advise against these lenses, mainly from an era when travel lens quality was average or to encourage beginners to avoid relying too much on zoom and remain static. However, using a travel lens for travel is entirely feasible!

Inadequate Aperture?

Many fret about limited lens options and worry about insufficient aperture when using a zoom lens. Will it be challenging in low-light or indoor scenarios? This can be anticipated. Are there many low-light activities? Are there crucial scenes in low-light? If there are essential shots, it’s worth carrying another lens with a larger aperture. Yet, in reality, elevating ISO in most situations results in satisfactory photos.

At times, consider carrying two cameras. For example, when I visited Tokyo, anticipating a lot of evening activities and knowing Tokyo’s nightscapes are fantastic for photography, I took a Leica Q2 for wide-angle shots and an A7R3 paired with a 55mm F1.8. This way, I had two lenses with large apertures suitable for street photography, and the weight was almost the same as carrying an additional zoom lens.

Battery Life

When traveling, spending entire days outdoors, you might only have a chance to recharge once a day. Ensuring your camera has sufficient battery life is essential. When on longer trips, I always bring a camera as my phone might be needed for navigation and quick power drain. Even though many cameras support charging with power banks, I find this method inconvenient. It’s more practical to carry multiple batteries.

Using Only a Smartphone?

Absolutely possible! Especially with flagship smartphones offering multi-lens capabilities, they cover most shooting scenarios. They are convenient for sharing with family and uploading to social platforms. However, there are situations where this might not be suitable: for those reliant on camera image quality or in cases where the smartphone’s battery life is inadequate.

Matching Bag Capacity

Even with excellent physical endurance, if your backpack can’t accommodate all your gear, it becomes an issue. Especially considering space for items purchased during travel, water, and snacks. In Taiwan, I often used a backpack, hence carried one or two cameras with multiple lenses. However, after spending time in the USA, I switched to using a side bag for safety and mobility. As a result, I downsized to an NEX-5T with a 28–200mm lens, using my smartphone for wide-angle shots.

Conclusion: Stick to “Three Devices Rule”

For those considering these factors, it’s likely you’re mindful of physical limitations. You might consider a principle I follow: no more than three detachable items. For example, a camera body with a maximum of two lenses, or a camera with one lens supplemented by a device like GoPro, GRiii, X100, or RX100 — compact cameras without interchangeable lenses. Even carrying three cameras can work, as I did for a family trip to Hawaii, prioritizing relaxation. I brought a phone, Insta360 Go3, and DJI OSMO Pocket 2 — lightweight tools that captured many cherished moments.
