Monica Kang, Draper University Summer 2019

Monica Kang is the founder and CEO of InnovatorsBox, a creative education company helping companies tap into their most underutilized resource: their employees’ creativity. An entrepreneur, professor and author of Rethink Creativity, Kang is passionate about creativity and innovation at work. Monica delivered a workshop that left the Draper superheroes with more questions than answers keeping us curious and on our toes.

The main part of the talk was about the creativity formula.

“Creativity Formula” is suggesting that creativity (represented by “C”) is a function (represented by “f”) of the following: K (knowledge) — obtained through our life experiences. I (imagination) — ones ability to generate ideas or make connections. E (evaluation) — examing the advantages and disadvantages of a particular idea or situation.

Monica’s workshop emphasized that creativity is continuous and acts similar to muscles — a small shift in your routine can give you a key insight into finding the unexpected perfect solution. Adding innovation is very important for your business - skipping little things and never iterating will kill the routine in your work environment and ultimately prevent innovation.

But wait, the solution? The 4 P’s of marketing and innovation:

The Creativity Equation:

C = fa (K, I, E)

C: Creativity.

K: Knowledge.

I: Imagination.

E: Evaluation.

The marketing mix or, 4 P’s of marketing (Product, Price, Place, Promotion). were invented to narrow your investigation on to a specific area of your organization. There are also 4 P’s of innovation. They are (Product, Process, Position and Paradigm).

· Products.

· Processes.

Changing how a product is created or delivered.

· Positions.

Changing in the context, and way in which a product or process is applied.

· Paradigms.

Changes in the underlying mental and business models.
