As X World Games’ Dream Idols show begins to build its fortune along the road of web3 entertainment, the VR idols and global trainees have taken the world by storm with their unique and innovative approach to live performance competitions.

One of the most thrilling aspects of Dream Idols lies in its stage model, which has revolutionized how fans engage with their favourite performers. And yes, this makes Dream Idols a one-of-a-kind experience you can see from nowhere else.

Let’s take a closer look at the stage flow mechanism of Dream Idols, including how the overall stage model works, the details of each stage, and some new terminology.

Terminology

  1. Dream Idols trainees — Girls undergoing singing and dancing training to perform behind the scenes of the VR idols.
  2. The Dream Idols — Simulated VR idols inspired by selected characters from X World Games’ famous Dream Card game.
  3. Talent Pool — The pool consisting of all trainees that have been recruited.
  4. Return Pool — The pool consisting of eliminated trainees from each stage. Trainees in the Return Pool can be brought back to either the current stage or next season’s talent pool by receiving votes from their fans.
  5. Dreamers — The official name of Dream Idols’ fans in the ecosystem.

Dream Idols Fantasia: Real-Person Girl Group or VR Girl Group?

Well, this is probably the most frequently asked question about Dream Idols. Many fans are still confused about the concept of Dream Idols, whether it is a VR or a real-person girl group.

And the answer is….

**Drumrolls**

IT IS BOTH!

To put it simply, the Dream Idols show combines traditional web2 and web3 decentralized blockchain entertainment practices. It is indeed a talent competition show, just like Produce 101 or AKB48, but the difference is that these trainees are the “representatives” of the VR idols. This means that the VR idols’ performance on stage will be portrayed by the trainees. Going through different stages, fans will be able to cheer for both trainees and VR idols at the same time.

Stage Structure

Aside from the must-have energy and enthusiasm, understanding the stage mechanism and how the competition works are necessary for the Dreamers.

The Dream Idols concert consists of 5 stages: C Stage, B Stage, A Stage, S Stage, and the final concert.

C Stage (Talent Selection)

C-Stage, or the “Talent Selection” stage, is the first-ever stage where trainees must compete in pairs (1 vs. 1). Only one winner will be chosen to advance to the next stage, and the loser will go to the Return Pool.

B Stage (Ranking)

The second stage of the Dream Idols show. At this stage, trainees will be ranked in groups of 3 based on their performance, from the best to the worst.

A Stage (Single Idol Battle)

At the A stage, two groups of trainees (2–6 trainees total) will compete against one another in the name of each Dream Idol character* they belong to. Since A stage is all about 1 VS 1 idol-to-idol competition, trainees must do their best to represent their VR idol in order to step up onto the higher stage.

How trainees compete in A-stage is still one on one. Trainees will be matched according to their rankings in B stage; with the 3rd, 2nd, and 1st rank of each of the two groups competing with one another (e.g. 3rd place vs. 3rd place, 2nd place vs. 2nd place, and 1st place vs 1st place).

The infographic below illustrates an example of what A-stage grouping could look like:

From the sample A-stage grouping above, 3 trainees (trainees #1, #2, #3) are competing on behalf of Andal, and another 3 trainees (trainees #4, #5, #6) are competing on behalf of Betty. Suppose that Betty’s trainees do not perform well on stage, Betty (as an idol) will lose to Andal. In this case, all three of Andal’s trainees will proceed to the S stage.

Here we can see that trainee #4 does the best job and holds the best rank among Betty’s trainees. Even though she belongs to the losing idol, she will be sent back to the C stage instead of going to the Returning Pool with the rest of the losing trainees (trainees #5 and #6). However, trainee #4 will be given a special treat: she will automatically pass the C stage selection and directly move onto the B stage without having to compete again with other trainees under Betty.

* Dream Idols VR characters include Andal, Catherine, Luceo, and Betty.

* The trainees will only represent 2 VR idols in this stage.

S Stage

Similar to the A stage, the S stage is an Idol v. Idol penultimate stage. A total of 4–12 trainees will be competing as representatives of the 4 VR idols. However, what makes S stage different from the A stage is that it will not be a 1 vs. 1 competition but rather a 1:1:1:1 competition. This simply means that the idols will be competing against each other.

By the end of the S stage, the idol and trainee rankings will determine how many and which trainees to stay and continue in the competition. The final rankings will run from first to last place, with the first having 3 remaining spots, the second for 2 spots, the third for 1 spot, and there will be no spot for the fourth place.

Concert

Being able to perform in the final show is the ultimate goal for every trainee. About 8–12 trainees will compete for 4 idols at the final concert, just like the S stage. In the end, 3 of the winning idol’s trainees will debut, as well as the trainee with the highest star value (trainees can collect star values from all the show PK). This puts the total number of debuted trainees to 4.

Stage Frequency

Throughout the year, all the competition stages will happen at different frequencies:

  • C, B, and A stages: approximately 1 to 4 times a month
  • S stage: held quarterly, except a specific quarter (3 times in a year)
  • Concert: once a year

Stage Flow

Speaking of trainees’ given rankings, fans’ votes are the most important aspect determining their chances of earning back their spot on the show.

The infographic below shows that, first, all trainees from the talent pool will have to go through the first-ever voting process to determine who will get to perform on the C stage. Fan voting is done through the dreamidols.fans website and only those who hold purchased tickets can vote.

After the first voting round, any trainee in the talent pool who does not get enough votes will be eliminated before they even get to perform on stage. The remaining trainees will be randomly paired (1 vs. 1) to compete with each other in the C stage, and the winning trainee will then advance to the B stage.

The loser of each C stage will go to the “Return Pool,” where they are waiting to be voted back into the competition by the fans (the repechage). Whoever wins the repechage will earn a spot in the upper stage level (C stage => B Stage => A Stage => S Stage => Concert). This flow mechanism applies throughout the other higher-level stages.

From picture 1, trainee #5 gets eliminated from the Dream Idols show after the initial fans’ voting round. The remaining 4 trainees are then randomly paired up to compete one-on-one in the C stage. From the examples, the winners of each C stage are trainee #1 and #3, respectively. These two trainees will automatically proceed to the B stage, whereas the loser trainees #2 and #4 will go to the Return Pool. Here, trainee #2 wins the repechage according to fans’ votes and gets a second chance to join trainees #1 and #3 in the B stage competition.
