Transportation in New Haven CT
Hi DreamKit members. I would like to share some information with you about public transportation in Connecticut.

As of 2015, approximately 30% of New Haven residents and students do not own a car. Most of these residents count on public transportation to get to their destination(s).
In March of 2021, Governor Lamont announced that CTtransit will provide free statewide transportation on weekends over the summer called “Weekend Wheels”. The program will use funds from the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act. It began May 31st and will end September 6th 2021, between Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. You will be able to go to state parks and beaches; such as Silver Sands State Park, Hammonasset Beach State Park, Sleeping Giant State Park, Bluff Point State Park, and Fort Trumbull State Park. There are other ride services in the area:
- Yale shuttle. Yale University provides transportation between the university, East Rock neighborhood, and the New Haven train stations for students, faculty, and staff. This service is free year-round except for certain holidays. Services for Yale community include: special services van, VA Hospital shuttle, West Campus shuttle, Yale New Haven Hospital shuttle, and much more. For more information please visit: youryale.edu.
- Bike Share New Haven offers quality bikes for rent throughout New Haven CT. Their website indicates, as of May 2020, services have been suspended until further notice. Please visit their website at: bikenewhavenct.com.
- Husky health insurance offers non-emergency medical transportation to and from your doctor appointments. Contact Member Services at 1–800–859–9889 for more information.
- CTtransit is a local bus route that makes frequent stops in New Haven and other Connecticut surrounding areas. Please visit their website for fares, route listings, and schedules at: CTtransit.com.
- Union Station is the main railroad passenger station in New Haven. Union Station is provided by Amtrak, Metro-North and Shore Line East. This railroad is only used by New Haven-Hartford-Springfield line. They also have parking services. Visit their website at: https://parknewhaven.com/parking-services-at-union-station-new-haven-ct/.
- Amtrak has some great everyday discounts for kids ages 2 through 12 years old, disabled individuals, seniors, military personnel and veterans, students, and much more. Please visit their website at: amtrak.com.
- Metro North Railroad serves customers in New York, Connecticut on Hudson, Harlem and New Haven, including Port Jervis and Pascack Valley. Children under the age of 5 are free. Reduced fares for seniors, disabled individuals, military personnel, and Medicare recipients. For more information about fares and schedules, visit their website at: new.mat.info.
- Ride Sharing:
- Zipcar, a modern car sharing company has partnered with Yale University. It is available for hourly and daily rates. Yale students, faculty, and staff visit: www.zipcar.com/yale . For members or to locate a car visit: www.zipcar.com.
- LyftUp (Lyft) offers access to affordable and reliable rides. Visit their website at: lyft.com.
- Uber offers an easier way to get around. They also deliver food to your work or home. You may also choose to rent a car instead of having a driver. Visit their website at: uber.com. Tap either eat or Ride in the top left.
