The Curse of Riot Esports Features
We’ve recently talked about Team Liquid and a certain cursed number, but there is an jinx that comes directly from the developers of League of Legends. If Riot Games hype you up, you’ll most likely lose. Here’s how it works.
Animated Short
The first animated feature with players was at 2013 Worlds. It was released shortly before the final between SK Telecom T1 and Star Horn Royal Club. However, the video was clearly made in summer. It showcased ALTERNATE aTTaX, CJ Frost, MVP, Team Dignitas, Counter Logic Gaming, Invictus Gaming, Team WE, Taipei Assassins and ahq e-Sports Club as the World Championship participants, even though all these teams failed to qualify for the tournament. Well, at least Riot got Fnatic, Cloud9, Team SoloMid, Gambit Gaming and OMG right.
Luckily, the concept for the 2018 video was more forgiving. The feature recapped 7 previous editions, and most people who were referenced from 2017 made it to the latest championship.
The Journey Series
Celebrating Korea’s dominance in League of Legends, Riot Games released a series of animated features on different aspects of the local scene. Unfortunately, none of the still-active narrators achieved their goals for the 2018 World Championship. Faker’s SK Telecom T1 (coached by PoohManDu) didn’t qualify for the tournament, CuVee’s Gen.G delivered Korea the worst Worlds performance ever, and KT Rolster, with Mata, (who recalled playing at the 2014 final venue) fell in the quarterfinals.
