DREP Foundation Co-founder Xiaolong Xu’s Interview with Alpaca Blockchain

Xiaolong was recently invited by a Chinese media Alpaca Blockchain for an interview. We translated the copy from Chinese to English and noted down some key takeaways for our overseas community. Enjoy!

Xiaolong Xu is the co-founder of DREP Foundation as well as the former lead developer for QTUM.

As the CS expert, he’s richly experienced in program development and has once worked for Tencent and Microsoft. After graduating with a master degree from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Xiaolong joined Tencent’s Timi Studio.

Driven by his passion for technology, he first entered the Blockchain industry as early as 2016 by joining the renowned Blockchain project QTUM as lead developer. There as a seasoned Blockchain expert, he witnessed the overnight development of infrastructure public chain.

Just as “public chain” is becoming an ever-heated battlefield, Xiaolong has already gone one step further by reflecting upon the feasible application scenario of public chains, and that’s how he came to the solution addressing the industry pain points — DREP.

Now under DREP Foundation, he focuses on exploring the new horizon of application and users with the use of Blockchain technology with his core team members in Singapore, Dubai, San Francisco and Shanghai.

DREP public chain, a decentralized infrastructure with high scalability and secured performance that supports reputation data storage and functionality. DREP system is composed of a two-layer structure, DREP infrastructure reputation public chain and DREP reputation protocol based in the service layer.

Key Takeaways from Xiaolong

Three major directions of development for blockchain applications:

1. Content. Movies, music, literature etc. that face copyright issues; or other means of content distribution and payment for platforms like Quora and Zhihu.

2. Gaming. Gaming industry is a virtual world with an economy, which is somewhat similar to the concept of blockchain. We see gaming development when the first smart phones came out, or when VR/AR came out. Therefore, I can safely predict that gaming could also have great potential for blockchain.

3. Finance. Take Bitcoin for example, it’s a P2P cryptocurrency and has therefore a finance feature on its own. We can already see many banks, both at home and abroad diving into the blockchain sector for potential deployment.

Xiaolong’s Vision for DREP:

I see DREP as an open network that connects across different chains and sectors. It’s not just about one industry, but a multi-dimension protocol connecting users and data.

I’d rather show people what I have already achieved instead of telling around before our products come into existence. For example, I wouldn’t tell people we have achieved 1000 if we’re only at 100.

What’s the deal with Blockbate?

Blockbate is essentially an online debating website for everyone to freely publish their opinions. Instead of focusing on who’s right or wrong, we emphasize on user participation and active contribution and reward them with tokens so that we can create a spontaneous content platform with genuine value.

This is a combination of a platform service and token economy.

How do you see the blockchain industry as a whole right now?

I think this industry is still at its early stage, which is why it’s actually a perfect timing for many who want to get into the industry. Coming from a technical background myself, I’d say that the people that we lack the most for a rapid development of blockchain would be technical talents.

My genuine wish for those who are in this industry is that we could all calm ourselves down to actually make things happen instead of chasing the next “big thing”. I see blockchain as a long-term career, and I look forward to playing an active part in it with you all. Thank you.
