Being the largest country in North America and home to several multicultural communities, Canada is a popular tourist destination with breathtaking sceneries, majestic mountains, spectacular coastlines and many natural attractions. Listed below are a few less traditional gems that simply must be visited at least once in your lifetime!

Meander among delightful floral displays in the Butchart Gardens

Located in Vancouver, the Butchart Gardens spreads across 22 hectares of land and contains over one million plants of 700 different species. This national historic site of Canada is surrounded by waterfalls, fountains, and sculptures that make up an authentic natural museum.

Mount Thor is the world’s greatest vertical fall

Apart from its majestic beauty and spectacular silhouette, Mount Thor is located on Baffin Island, in Nunavut. Being the earth’s greatest vertical drop at 1,250 metres, this mountain is a popular site for rock climbing and camping.

Relive the cultural history of the Quadra Islands

This site of attraction is bursting with cultural displays of totem poles, native art pieces, ancient petroglyphs and the history of the Kwagiulth First Nation. This place is of great aboriginal significance but also has several landmarks, handicraft markets, and beaches that are worth visiting.

The Smoking Hills are always burning

Located about 350 km west of the mouth of the Mackenzie River, you’ll find the Smoking Hills on the east coast of Cape Bathurst burning and smoking for several centuries. This real natural spectacle is due to a chemical reaction between carbon and sulfur.

The bubbles of Abraham Lake explode against ice

Situated in Alberta, Abraham Lake is one of the most beautiful but dangerous artificial lakes. When the lake freezes during the winter months, methane bubbles (emitted by bacteria when they consume dead organic matter) ascend slowly until they collide and explode against the ice.

Sojourn in a floating hotel

Every year between May and October, The King Pacific Lodge Hotel is towed to Princess Royal Island in British Columbia. Although this luxurious hotel floats, it isn’t a ship. This hotel offers one of the most extravagant accommodations and luxury travel packages.

René-Levasseur is an island in a lake

René-Levasseur island is known to be inside Quebec’s Lake Manicouagan. What makes this place special is that the island (2,020km²) is larger than the lake (1,942 km²) surrounding it. This destination is often called the ‘eye of Quebec’.

Travel to Canada without leaving the Caribbean

Located in the Bahamas and the Dominican Republic, the Turks and Caicos Islands are home to some of the best beaches in the world. There is a possibility of having these islands annexed to Canada as the thirteenth province in the future!

Kitsault is Canada’s famous ghost town

Kitsault is a deserted town that is equipped with more than a hundred homes, duplexes, electricity, water, schools, libraries, gyms and even cable television! No one lives in Kitsault since 1982 after the market for molybdenum crashed and the residents left.
