What is Dripto?

In short, it is the merging of drip and crypto, in both nomenclature and business model for our flagship product: an online marketplace where streetwear is purchased and sold using cryptocurrency. Building our platform on the blockchain gave us the necessary tools to build a truly unique user experience. Every business relies on profits to survive, and we’re no different in this regard. But on top of being the first and only e-commerce platform of its kind, the intentions and underlying motivations leading to Dripto’s genesis do; namely, our commitment to collaborating with — and within — our online and physical communities.

Culture. Crypto. Finance. Fashion. Innovation.

At the intersection of each lies an uninhabited frontier. It is at these crossroads where we’ve laid our foundation. The landscape is as vast as the possibilities are endless, with enough room to architect a community that celebrates and advances disciplines of all kinds, taking them beyond traditional boundaries.

So that’s exactly what we sought out to do.

It’s been about 3 months since Steve and Chris approached me with a project they’d been working on, Overload. I wasn’t able to glean much context from the name, but if I had to, I would’ve guessed something along the lines of a play-to-earn type of game.

What I was not expecting to hear was “A sneaker resale market with crypto payments”.

That night I found myself asking “How?” as much as “Why?” Looking back, that’s probably how I knew we were on to something special. But the discovery phase was difficult. The more conversations we had, the more questions we seemed to have.

Why would someone use crypto to buy shoes instead of investing? How can we compete in two markets that are both over-saturated? Do sneakerheads use crypto? Do crypto users buy streetwear? How do we appeal to both audiences? Is the only thing that sets us apart from other resale platforms the “B” we put in front of USD?

These were not easy to answer. No other company — resale platform or otherwise — had done what we intend to. Without case studies or blueprints to follow, frustrations began to mount, exacerbated by the friction between differing personality types and career backgrounds.What we discovered, however, is that despite being opposites in many ways, artists and entrepreneurs share a unique and defining characteristic — an insatiable desire to build things we can call our own.

As we continued to chisel away at the marble, a recurring theme became increasingly apparent, finally giving us a clear vision to sculpt Dripto into what it has always meant to be, and where it is destined to remain.

Dripto is predicated on the concept of unrealized parallels and the union of contradictory ideas to create the unexpected. It is why we’ve created a space for creators, innovators, and leaders to collaborate across industries.

Upcoming publications will dive into a plethora of topics and subjects, including platform specifics, blockchain technology, streetwear, art, music, and defi; penned by guest authors of varying backgrounds and passions alongside our internal team.
