What to do if you have an accident with your rental car?

The last thing you need on vacation is a car accident, and especially not in a rental car. However, sometimes things happen even if we don’t want them to happen, so we must be prepared for anything. Before you start driving, it’s important to learn what to do if the worst happens. For that reason, our team has prepared 5 steps to take if you have an accident with your rental car.

Evaluate the situation. First, make sure that everyone is safe and that no one is hurt. If someone is injured, call 911 immediately. If the scene is dangerous, go to a safe location.

Collect evidence and information. Exchange contact and insurance information with other drivers and injured parties involved in the accident. Ask the responding police officer for a copy of the accident report and the officer’s name, badge number, contact information and the accident case number. Take multiple pictures of the damage and of the scene of the crash.

Call the car owner. Use the car owner’s phone number to call and report the accident involving your rental. Ask what the owner would like you to do with the car — where to bring it if it’s driveable and where to have it towed if it’s not.

Take care of the car. You are responsible for the car during the rental period. If the car is drivable, bring it back to the car owner’s place or to another location. If the car is not operational, call for roadside assistance from the insurance company.

File a report with the car owner. The owner will report the damage to the Drive Drive Car system.

The reported damage will be reviewed by the representative of the insurance company, who will handle the reported damages and will determine the total amount of the damage. The total amount of the damage is deducted from the deposit that you have paid if it is less than the damage done, and you will be returned the part of the remaining deposit. If the damage estimated by the insurance company is higher than the pre-paid deposit, the deposit is charged in full, and the rest is covered by the insurance company.
