UK’s Emerging Digital Health Startups Show Promise In Data-Driven Biomedical Science

--

Mount Sinai Innovation recently traveled to London to host innovation programming, strengthen relationships, and build new partnerships. We also had the opportunity to visit KQ Labs, located within the beautiful Francis Crick Institute, to meet and mentor KQ Labs’ current cohort of startups.

KQ Labs is an intensive accelerator program offered to high growth potential (early-stage) startups in the area of data-driven biomedical science. KQ’s staff reserved time for us and our partners to hear pitches from five startups tackling challenges from diabetes to finding cures for rare diseases. We also shared insights from our perspective as a large US health system. We came away quite impressed and are encouraged for the future of tech borne out of the UK that could have a potential impact on patients in the US.

Below are brief descriptions and key points of differentiation about the startups we met:

Quin

Using science, engineering, and design to help patients with diabetes who take insulin to make the best possible decisions.

Solving this problem requires the real-time experience of people living with diabetes, taking data off wearables to classify their lives, and stratifying people according to their outcomes.

The fundamental difference between Quin and the 3,000 apps for people with diabetes is to help people get a good quality of life through training algorithms instead of just continuous monitoring.

ConcR

Cancer resistance — data-driven predictions of patient outcome based on multi-omics data.

Treatment resistance is responsible for 90% of cancer-related deaths and consumes approximately 30% of the total cancer care spend.ConcR exists to tackle this issue, combining cutting edge machine learning techniques and knowledge of tumor progression. The software provides clinicians with evidence-based outputs of patient-specific cancer progression, enabling therapy adaptation before treatment resistance arises.

Macusoft

Macular disease is the biggest cause of preventable sight loss in the developed world. Macusoft is developing clinical data and genomics-based AI systems to support treatment to prevent avoidable blindness.

Demand for ophthalmologists exceeds capacity with most doctors retiring within the next ten years. Macusoft provides instant, personalized treatment plan through data assimilation and intelligent triage. SasS model delivers improvements in outcomes and savings for NHS.

The market is growing 7.3% each year and Macusoft competes with traditional screening.

Deepscope

Deepscope is the first free ultrasound simulator for mobile devices. It enables healthcare professionals both to learn, using the free mobile app, and to teach, by easily creating their own clinical simulations.

Ultrasound has two major problems: education and variability. The market shows an increasing need for hospitals, academic institutions, and individuals.

Mendelian

Accelerates the diagnosis of rare genetic diseases by building smart software solutions for clinicians, health providers, and patients.

Rare diseases are not rare, 1 in 17 affected worldwide. Mendelian is currently targeting 50 (of the 7,000 rare diseases.)
