Posters plastered with “1kg feeds” cover all sides of the hotel and tantalisingly beckon patrons inside. Located just minutes away from Burwood Station, Burwood Hotel is the hottest destination for a filling and tasty meal without the hefty price tag. It offers kilo buckets of ribs, drumsticks and wings for less than $20.00!

Burwood Hotel has recently undergone a renovation, rebranding itself as an establishment that offers the best of East and West cuisine. It caters to Eastern and Western palettes, as evinced by the food on offer and the menu itself — written in both English and Mandarin Chinese. Some of the dishes that find its way onto the menu include pub grub favourites to traditional Asian bites.

“Burwood Hotel is the hottest destination for a filling and tasty meal without the hefty price tag.”

Burwood Hotel is impressively designed, especially for a space that was a hotel pub in its previous life. The establishment packs a lot of character, especially with its stylish collection of interior decorations. Lush pot plants are tastefully scattered around the dining area with bird cage light installations hung from the ceilings. The bar area is located at the back of the hotel, with its vast array of drinks displayed on what appear to resemble hotel luggage trolleys.

My dining companion and I decided to try one of the famous 1kg buckets — opting for the drumsticks drenched in smoky BBQ sauce. Patrons luckily get a disposable glove that ensures your hands don’t get too sticky from the sauce. Whilst the gloves help to protect the hands, there’s no protection for the face. I made a mess as my entire mouth was covered in the finger-licking sauce. My friend humorously remarked that this was certainly not “first date appropriate”.

To accompany the 1 kilogram of drumsticks, we also ordered a side of sweet potato fries and pork belly baos. The sweet potato fries were literally served in a bucket with a side of creamy aioli. The fries didn’t retain the crunch that I am normally used to, so it was a slight disappointment. The pork belly baos, on the other hand, exceeded my expectations. The buns were light and fluffy and the pork belly was accompanied with a delicious tossed kimchi salad. The sourness from the fermented cabbage worked well with the succulent pork belly. An uncommon yet effective pairing in a Chinese bao.

For dessert, we ordered two dishes. We opted for the classic Australian (or debatably New Zealand) pavlova along with the flourless chocolate cake. The pavlova was drizzled with an orange curd, which helped to balance the sweetness from the brown sugar meringue. It was a very seasonal dish, especially with the generous portions of strawberries that lay atop the bed of double cream. Along with the pavlova, we tried the flourless chocolate cake. To describe it in one word would be “decadent”. The lack of flour enhanced the flavours of the chocolate and each bite was as rich as a bite out of a triple fudge brownie. Thankfully, we had the flavours of the vanilla ice cream to give it that nice refreshing hit.

Overall

If you’re extremely hungry but don’t want to pay a bucket load, then take a trip down to Burwood Hotel. For only $12.00, patrons can help themselves to a different kind of a bucket load. The kilogram of chicken wings and drumsticks can be smothered in smoky BBQ, house chilli, satay or Korean chilli sauce — it’s entirely up to you! Whatever your spice tolerance or flavour palette, there’s bound to be a type of seasoning that would suit your taste preferences. To accompany the affordable bucket of chicken, give their classic Asian bites a try. Along with baos, the folks at Burwood Hotel offer spring rolls, salt and pepper squid and sui mai. Just like the multicultural suburb of Burwood, Burwood Hotel offers the best of East and West!
