Shay Davis on streamlining IT as a company grows

As part of Dropbox’s corporate engineering team, Shay designs internal systems to keep up with growth.

What did you do before Dropbox?

Prior to Dropbox, I worked for Airbnb on the IT team streamlining various systems and security. I also worked in Apple retail and Apple corporate, which is where the bulk of my knowledge comes from.

Why did you decide to join Dropbox?

I read a quote from Dropbox CEO Drew Houston that said, “Failure doesn’t matter. You only have to be right once.” This resonated with me on many levels. I knew Dropbox would be a company that would challenge and inspire me to be my best.

What’s your role?

I’m part of the corporate engineering team at Dropbox, and I specialize in Apple hardware. I currently navigate onboarding processes, help create new systems, and manage all accounts for new hires.

What surprised you about Dropbox when you joined?

I was surprised by the interconnectedness of each department. Knowing that my colleagues are resources is so empowering!

What are the main differences between working at a very large tech company, and a place like Dropbox?

The main difference between the two is flexibility. Dropbox offers far more flexibility to really own your projects, and drive them through to completion. I’ve found this valuable for building relationships and growing within a role.

What are the most challenging and exciting aspects of your job?

The biggest challenge for me has been making adjustments to various processes since Dropbox is growing so quickly. The most exciting thing is, well… making adjustments to various processes since Dropbox is growing so quickly! In addition, my team’s diversity keeps each day exciting. Everyone hails from different companies, interests, and backgrounds. We know how to learn from each other, and have fun at the same time.

What have been some of your favorite moments at Dropbox so far?

We had a recent internal event where leadership talked about the vision and strategy for Dropbox for the next few years. I’m so impressed and proud to be a part of a company that knows how to strategize, compete, and deliver a great product at the same time.

What are you looking forward to next, for yourself and for Dropbox?

I’m looking forward to Dropbox becoming a staple tool that is implemented across all platforms and intertwined with the operating system. I’m also excited to see our new products and integrations — such as Project Harmony — roll out to users across the world.

What’s something most people don’t know about you?

I have a love for film. I double majored in business and film, and I am almost always working on a “secret” movie project. I’ve also played the saxophone since elementary school. And now, I’m learning how to play the guitar and drums!

If you weren’t working in IT, what would you be doing?

I’d be working in post production — hopefully for one of your favorite TV shows!

How would you describe Dropbox in 3 words?

Innovative. Problem-solving. Progressive. Dropbox is solving a problem in the most innovative way. I can’t remember the last time I personally used an external hard drive. Dropbox is growing.

Dropbox is growing. We’d love for you to join us.
