May is Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, a time to celebrate the culture, traditions, and history of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in the United States. Our employee resource group Asians@ leads our month-long celebrations around the theme: “I AM _____.“ The core message is to showcase the vibrant diversity and unique experiences both within Asia and involving those at Dropbox who identify as AAPI. The aim is to counter the stereotypes of the model minority myth and simultaneously celebrate bold and multi-faceted AAPI individuals and the experiences that have shaped them. In celebration of AAPI month, we’ll be featuring Dropboxers and sharing their thoughts, experiences, and how they fill in the blank.

Q: What is your name, what office do you work out of, and how long have you been at Dropbox?

A: I’m Lily Kim. I’m based in the San Francisco office, and I’ve been at Dropbox for almost a year.

Q: What is your current role at Dropbox?

A: I am a global campaigns manager on the marketing team at Dropbox. I help tell the story of “Why Dropbox” to everyone from construction project managers to film producers.

Q: Anything that you have done/accomplished at Dropbox that you’re proud of?

A: During heritage/history months, we highlight diversity at Dropbox with activities led by our employee resource groups. This month, we’re celebrating Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month, and I had the opportunity to co-direct and produce a video featuring amazing AAPI Dropboxers.

Q: Have you had transformational or inspirational moments at Dropbox?

A: Every Dropboxer can donate our business product to one nonprofit every year. Having the opportunity to donate to some of the commendable nonprofits that I care about, 12PLUS and Leap, and seeing the product help them fulfill their mission has been incredibly rewarding and inspiring.

Q: Why did you decide to join Dropbox?

A: In my job search, I prioritized two things: ethos and culture. I wanted to work for a company that I believed had a strong ethos and desire to change the world for the better. I also wanted to join a company where I would be surrounded by other smart, fun folks. Dropbox was a perfect fit!

Lily’s preferred state: coffee in hand+sunnies

Q: What surprised you most about Dropbox when you joined?

A: How open people are! Dropbox is the first company I’ve been at where you have access to everyone’s calendar, and if you put 30 minutes on someone’s calendar to grab coffee, they’ll actually make time to get coffee with you, no questions asked. It does help that we have an amazing coffee bar (little-r) in our building.

Q: How do you unleash your creative energy in your day?

A: We have a lot of unique nooks throughout our office in San Francisco, so I try to change up my environment to spark new ideas. My favorites are our little-r coffee bar for 1:1 chats, our pink library for cranking out work, and our music room, The Mint, for some musical inspiration. There are a few talented Dropbox pianists who I enjoy listening to.

Q: What are your hobbies? Or what can we find you doing outside of work?

A: I love the outdoors, so you can find me hiking or daydreaming about which national park to visit next. I’ve been eyeing Crater Lake in Oregon!

Q: Any accomplishments you’re proud of outside of work?

A: I recently had the privilege of planting five trees in the Excelsior neighborhood in San Francisco with some members of my church. It was incredible to bring life to the community in this way. Check out Friends of the Urban Forest if you’re interested in beautifying San Francisco with new trees!

Q: What is something interesting about you that not a lot of people know?

A: I play four instruments to varying levels of mastery: guitar, bass, drums, and violin.

Q: What does AAPI Heritage Month mean to you?

A: AAPI Heritage Month is a time to celebrate the amazing, diverse cultures throughout the APAC region, and remember the roots that make us who we are today.

Q: Are there any present-day inspirational Asian or Pacific Islanders in your life?

A: I was very inspired by the 14 Asian American athletes who competed at the 2018 Winter Olympics. It was refreshing to see representation of these athletes on the U.S. team, and watch them dominate in their respective sports!

Q: This year, Asians@ chose the theme “I am _____.” What word or phrase do you fill in the blank with?

A: I am bold. I am not limited by stereotypes or artificial ceilings placed on me!

Q: Can you tell us about your background (upbringing, ethnicity, etc.)?

A: I grew up in the heartland of America: Iowa City, IA. I was one of the few Korean Americans in my town and state, so I actually had reverse culture shock when I first visited some of the Korean ethnic enclaves in New Jersey and Los Angeles! Both of my parents are professors, so they always joke that I’m the least educated one in the family.

Q: Anything else you’d like to share about who you are, what you do, your personal life, your time at Dropbox or AAPI month that you haven’t shared already?

A: I just got married last month! I’m trying to see how long we can milk the “newly-wed” status for.
