Russia Vs. Reddit: Russia Bans Cannabis And Mushroom Threads

Reddit Wanted Poster posted by Roskomnadzor on its website

by Drugs Are Boring

Last week Russia banned Reddit over drug-related content found on its website, and according to The Guardian, scolded Reddit for its unwillingness to respond to emails, accusing it of being “too relaxed during the August holidays.”

Roskomnadzor, the Russian Federal media agency, ordered the Reddit page blocked on August 12 for content it says promotes the use of illegal drugs.

The offending content included a page entitled Minimal and Reliable Methods for Growing Psilocybe [Mushrooms], as well as an article on the cultivation of narcotic plants found in the subreddit /r/trees.

Roskomnadzor posted on its website “If anyone has contacts with the Reddit administration, ask them to check their email for letters from Roskomnadzor, otherwise, due to technological features, many operators may block the whole site.”

A “wanted poster” for Reddit was included with the message.

On August 13, Russia unblocked Reddit while thanking Russian internet users for pushing Reddit admin to respond to Russian emails. Reddit has subsequently “patched” things up with the Russian government.

In a thread posted last month regarding allowable content, Reddit stated that “anything illegal … things that are actually illegal, such as copyrighted material” will be removed, but that “discussing illegal activities, such as drug use, is not illegal” and will not be taken down.
