Detroit DSA’s Task Force on a Green New Deal takes shape

Detroit DSA has continued to organize at the intersection of labor and environmental justice after its successful rally at the Auto Show in January.

Following its inaugural meeting in late March, the Detroit DSA “Joint Labor and Ecosocialist Task Force on the Green New Deal” will be meeting monthly at Wayne State.

On March 30, 2019, Task Force members Natasha Fernández-Silber and Sean Crawford spoke alongside fellow Detroit DSA member Rashida Tlaib on a panel on labor and the Green New Deal organized by Labor Notes and the Troublemakers School.

On April 6, 2016, the Task Force organized a Green New Deal canvass in Detroit’s Lafayette Park. Among other things, canvassers requested that residents call their Congressional Rep. Brenda Lawrence (MI-14) to ask her to support the Green New Deal resolution put forward by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY) and Sen. Ed Markey (MA).

On April 16, 2019, Detroit DSA will be giving a presentation at Rep. Tlaib’s environmental justice working group on its proposal for regional legislation that would set up a new federal agency — the Great Lakes Authority (GLA) — tasked with creating green jobs and economic development in the Rust Belt.

On April 19, 2018, Detroit DSA will be co-hosting the Sunrise Movement’s “Road to the Green New Deal” speaking tour stop in Detroit. Speakers will include Rep. Rashida Tlaib, Dr. Abdul El-Sayed, Dortheá Thomas of Good Jobs Now, and Detroit DSA Co-Chair Natasha Fernández-Silber.
