FACTS

March 8 has been celebrated as the International Women’s Day for over 100 years now.

The first International Women’s Day was observed on March 19, 1911 which was actively celebrated by more than 1 million people from Germany, Switzerland, Austria, and Denmark.

On March 8th, 1971, at the height of World War I, women in Russia led a strike for “bread and peace.” which got them the “Right to vote”.

In 1975, the United Nations, celebrated International Women’s Day on March 8th for the first time. Since then, the UN has become the primary sponsor of the annual event and has encouraged even more countries around the world to embrace the holiday and its goal of celebrating.

In some countries, like Macedonia, Uzbekistan, Serbia, and Albania, Women’s Day is a combined holiday celebrated along with Mother’s Day.

In 2011, President Obama declared March as “Women’s History Month” in the United States to mark IWD by reflecting on “the extraordinary accomplishments of women” in shaping the country’s history.

Rachel Kyte, Sunita Narain, to name a couple, are already working towards advocating climate change and devising deep-rooted solutions in their respective capacities.

First UN theme for IWD 1996 was “Celebrating the Past, Planning for the Future”.

The 2021 UN theme for the IWD was “Women in leadership: Achieving an equal future in a COVID-19 world”, highlighting the impact that girls and women worldwide had as health care workers, caregivers, innovators and community organisers during the COVID-19 pandemic

This year, for International Women’s Day, the United Nations will recognise the contribution of women and girls who are leading the way to build a sustainable future for all.
