Virtual Workshops from the DSL

Are you interested in learning a new skill?

The Digital Scholarship Lab has migrated many of its most popular workshops into an online format to help continue to provide instruction during this COVID-19 situation.

Now, you can work at your own pace through topics like Tableau, Python, OpenRefine, poster design, and more in our self-guided courses. And upon completion of a skills-test, you’ll receive a certificate of completion to demonstrate that you’ve successfully achieved the workshop objectives.

Tableau for Data Visualization (1 & 2)
The two modules in this course will guide you through how to create a chart in Tableau Public, how to combine multiple sheets into a Tableau dashboard, and how to add filters. The second module will take you into some of the more advanced features of the software, including how to use calculated fields and how to create groups in your data.

Data Cleaning with OpenRefine
In this module, you’ll learn how to use OpenRefine to clean a data set. This means taking care of inconsistencies like non-standard date formats or author names. You’ll also learn how to split cells with different types of data and how to match local data to other data sets.

Designing Research Posters
One of our most popular workshops, this short module will guide you through best practices in designing a large-format poster, including which programs to use in designing them, the most common sizes of posters, how to arrange your text and images, and more.

Introduction to Python & Using Python
These two modules will introduce you to the Python coding language. The first will take you through the very basics, from Data Types to Functions to For- and While- loops. To complete the module, you’ll create a dice-rolling program. In the second, you’ll dive deeper into Python, and how to use it with a data set, including how to open a file in Python, and how to begin to use the Pandas library to explore your data.

Knight Lab Tools: StoryMapJS and TimelineJS
Learn how to use popular Knight Lab tools like StoryMapJS and TimelineJS to tell interactive and engaging stories. In each module, you’ll work through a step-by-step guide and use our provided assets to build a StoryMap and Timeline about Marquette University. Or, you can use your own images, videos, or other media items to create one on a topic of your choice!

Designing Business Cards with Adobe InDesign
In this workshop, you’ll learn how to use Adobe InDesign to create a personalized business card. Our step-by-step guide will instruct you on the different tools and features of the InDesign software, and to receive your completion certificate you’ll submit your brand new business card to our Dropbox.

You can request access to the DSL’s virtual workshop hub via this form. Once you’ve submitted your request, you should receive an email from the Marquette IT HelpDesk within seven (7) days. (Make sure to check your SPAM folders if you don’t see the email in your inbox!)

This email will contain a link to the site where you can create an account and start learning at your own pace!
