Scheduled in Yellow

I think I win for starting my digital dive in the most boring way possible: Checking my Google Calendar. I’m an over-scheduler, you see. I check this calendar too often, excited when most of my day’s events are covered in a transparent gray, signaling their completion. Sometimes, I even schedule in past events if they came up spontaneously. If a meeting goes 30 minutes longer than scheduled, I’ll update it.

Did I mention it is color-coded? A dark-gray for school-related events, yellow for enjoyment — coffee with friends, concerts, sometimes even naps, and a nice peachy color for meetings and outside involvement.

Yellow is my favorite color.

After I check my calendar and see I have a good chunk until my next colored-box todo (peach, to be exact), I return to my email and press the starred email from my sister with a link to her wedding photos. I look at the link about twice a day, scrolling through what seems like endless images. All beautiful, some awkward, ultimately special. A favorite image of mine is a picture of me trying to fix Grace’s earrings. They were her grandmothers and clip-on’s. Honestly, quite difficult to put on as it took 3 people to get them just right. The image looks more serene than the reality, as “shit” was mumbled under my breath more times than one.

Next, I go to my browser and intend to type “Drive,” to plop some of the wedding photos into, and my friend, Drew’s website is suggested instead. I click the link to check out if she had put up any new work since she started her job. (She didn’t.) It then reminded me that I should probably update my own website, so I click the saved tab resting on the top of my screen entitled, “Cate Willis Creative.” I quickly realize that I haven’t updated my Current Curation, a place for seasonal art direction inspiration.

I end on a typical note: Pinterest. I scroll through for 30 minutes or so, saving inspiration and other images to a folder aggressively titled, “FALL ART DIRECTION INSPO — CWC.” I don’t know why all-caps was necessary, but the deed is done.

It seems as though this digital dive is quite linear, one site reminding me of another. But, reader, don’t get me wrong: My mouse is distracted. Emails, messages — you know the type. The quiet notification dings and my mouse follows.

My friend Riley just texted to ask if she can come over around 3 pm to drop something off. “Sure,” I respond.

Should I tell you where my mouse lands next?

I trust you know where this is heading.

Riley, 3 pm. Scheduled in yellow.
