What is a Hackathon?
Hackathons are competitions that unite programmers from all over the world. During such events all participants are divided into small groups and are given tasks. The task is usually devoted to creating a certain problem and creating a solution. The first hackathons appeared in 1999, but gained in popularity much later — in 2010s, when some major companies were birthed through such competitions (for example, GroupMe that was bought by Skype; Nitobi that was acquired by Adobe and etc.). Usually, Hackathons start with a brief presentation about the event explaining the purpose of the task given. During the limited amount of time all the groups of programmers elaborate their own solutions and at the end of the competition they present their work to the judges. The best solutions are usually awarded prizes.
Why Hackathons are important?
Hackathons continue gaining in popularity with thousands of participants and new ideas. What is the reason for their popularity? There is a number or reasons why hackathons attract so much attention these days.
- An open field for venture-capitalists and head-hunters who look for talent
- An opportunity to develop your skills collaborating with others
- An opportunity to find new partners
- Team Building experience
- New ideas and software developed
It is one of the most effective ways to bring back the excitement from hacking to those programmers who are tired of their daily routine. The winners are awarded with monetary prizes and that are offered an opportunity to participate in tech workshops.
Why Hackathons are important to us?
The DUCATUR team feel it is very important to participate in such contests not only because of all the advantages mentioned above, but, also, because it helps us to see our strengths and weaknesses. We learn the way other teams work and communicate and share our own experiences, too. In addition, as we are quite a new and developing company, our victory became proof to us and our would-be clients that DUCATUR is going in the right direction. Such triumphs encourage us to continue doing our best and move across boundaries.
