Forget the end game, what’s your “now” game
I always hear people asking this question about projects I’m working on —
“So this thing you working on , what’s the end game?”
I used to wonder about this question for a long time. I’m doing something, I’m spending time and resources on this, there definitely should be an end game to this!
But then I tried to figure out how I looked at my other “end games”.
What was the end game when I started playing tennis as a kid? What’s the end game when I start playing an online game? What’s the end game when I go on a Netflix binge? What’s the end game when I go for a jog everyday? What was the end game when I invite my parents and in-laws over to my new place? What was the end game when my wife rescued a cat and we ended up adopting it ?What was the end game when I took a 6 month sabbatical early in my career? What was the end game when I decided to leave a corporate job and come work for startups?
None of the moments that I really enjoyed had any end game to them. I just did them because I loved the moment I was in when doing them. I didn’t have an end game then. I don’t think I have one now.
All I have is my “now” game. I think that’s all everyone has.
