· UN Claims Hong Kong Blockchain Firm Is North Korean Laundering Sham
The United Nations Security Council’s Sanctions Committee on North Korea has accused the country of using a Hong Kong-based blockchain firm as a front to launder money.
As South Korean newspaper Chosun Ilbo reported on Nov. 6, the committee conducted an investigation into the various strategies allegedly employed by the North to evade sanctions using cryptocurrencies and other means.
· Bakkt Set to Smash Bitcoin Trading Volume Record in November
Bitcoin (BTC) futures trading on the Intercontinental Exchange Bakkt platform is seeing a considerable rise in average daily volume so far this month compared to September and most of October.
Volumes yesterday, Nov. 5, hit close to their all-time-high — with 1061 traded contracts worth $10 million, a 96% increase over the previous day.
According to tracking data compiled by Twitter account Bakkt Volume Bot (@BakktBot) — which is not affiliated with Bakkt but rather with a Dutch journalist and crypto author Gert-Jan Lasterie — the platform had posted its all-time-high for traded contracts on Oct. 25.
· Azerbaijan to Adopt Blockchain-Based ID System in 2020
The Republic of Azerbaijan is planning to complete a project of blockchain-based digital identification system by the end of 2019. Farid Osmanov, director of the information technology department at the Central Bank of Azerbaijan (CBA), says that the new system will be adopted in the first quarter of 2020, local news agency Trend News reported on Nov. 6.
According to the report, the CBA executive introduced the plans speaking at the fourth International Banking Forum. Osmanov reportedly highlighted the system’s prospects in terms of security of personal data transferred to credit organizations as well as processing the majority of operations remotely.
The representative noted that at the initial stage, the remote accounts will be opened for legal entities and individuals. At the final stage, the project targets the inclusion of other banking services and automation of fund monitoring systems preventing terrorism financing and money laundering, the official said.
Osmanov pointed out that the direct result of the system’s adoption will be the “transition of the CBA to open banking.”
· ‘Bullish for Bitcoin’ — China Scraps Plans to Ban Cryptocurrency Mining
Bitcoin (BTC) mining will not face a state crackdown in China, authorities have confirmed in new official documents. As noted by Blockstream CSO Samson Mow and others on Nov. 6, mining no longer features on a list of industries Beijing considers undesirable.
The change came via a new edition of China’s Industrial Structure Adjustment Guidance Catalog, which will take effect from the start of 2020.
“China’s National Development and Reform Commission has removed #cryptocurrency mining from the list of industries they want to eliminate. Bullish for #Bitcoin,” Mow commented.
A previous incarnation of the document earlier this year had conversely included Bitcoin mining as one of the government’s targets.
The news marks a rare boon for Bitcoin-related activities in China, a country where cryptocurrency outside the control of the central bank remains all but banned.
