Mira Potkonen has her hand raised in victory

Dealgan Boxing Club’s Amy Broadhurst suffered quarter-final heartbreak at the World Boxing Elites at Ulan-Ude in Siberia on Thursday morning, going down to Mira Potkonen.

After seeing off Polish lightweight, Aneta Rygeilska, on Tuesday, Broadhurst’s ‘reward’ was a clash with the Finnish number one seed but the ‘Dundalk Southpaw’ was beaten on points with all five of the judges scoring the bout in her opponents’ favour.

Potkonen has something of a hoodoo over Irish boxers. In 2016, she beat Katie Taylor at the Rio Olympics, and in the past two years, she has overcome both Kellie Harrington and Broadhurst en route to gold at the European Elites.

Both fighters exploded from their respective corners, leading to a frantic opening 90 seconds in round one. Things eventually settled with Broadhurst hurting the Fin with a solid left jab while Potkonen replied with a stiff right of her own.

Potkonen’s long reach came into effect in round two and after a scrappy third round, the 38-year-old Finnish star was awarded the decision with four of the judges scoring it 30–27 in her favour.
