Cuchulainn Cycling Club members have enjoyed a good spell of results at a national level over the past couple of weeks.

After posting the third-fastest time in the 24km Time Trial for Masters 60+, Jimmy Flynn claimed another national medal at the Masters Cycling Championships in Wexford.

Jimmy and club president Sé Weston took part in the Masters 60+ road race the following day. Sé produced a fine display and after a 40km solo break, he looked a likely winner only to be heartbreakingly overhauled with the line almost in sight.

On the off-road scene, Maeve Baxter won the overall female category title at the Vitus Fast Tracks Enduro Series. Held over four rounds, Maeve finally clinched the title in the final round in Castlewellan, where she also had enjoyed another win.

September has also marked the start of the new cyclocross season which has proved a happy hunting ground for the club’s underage riders. Most recently, the racing was held in Lady Dixon Park in Belfast where Ffionn Dolan was second in the U12 girls’ race with Grace O’Rourke close behind in seventh.

In the U12 boys, Shane Meegan finished in 10th with club-mate Ryan Doogan in 13th. In the U14 girls’ section, Rhiannon Dolan was fourth with Aaron Doogan ninth in the boys’ race. Sean Daly recorded a top-25 finish in the senior A race, while PJ Hynes battled through a number of mechanicals to take 13th in the B race.

Elsewhere, the leisure season came to a close with the recent Tony Golden Memorial Cycle, an excellent event which covered 115km of the country. The club had close to 30 riders taking part in the cycle, which was run off in glorious sunshine.
