The St Patrick’s U16 team

St Patrick’s picked up their first win in group four of the U16 A Championship by overcoming St Kevin’s in Lordship on Monday evening.

The hosts opened the scoring in the first minute with a brilliant individual point from Darren Connor before Luke Higgins scored his first point a minute later.

The Kevin’s replied with a point from a free before Conor Watters sent a 45 into the square and Joseph Connor got the slightest of touches to score St Patricks’ first goal of the night.

Both teams exchanged the next four points with Joseph Connor — dominated the middle along with his midfield partner Padraig Duffy — adding a point to his earlier goal and Conor Watters kicking a brilliant 45 straight over the blackspot.

This left four between the teams but the Kevin’s hit 1–1 within the space of three minutes to level the scores.

The lively Luke Higgins put the Pat’s in front again with his second point of the half and Padraig Duffy extended the lead to two with his first point of the match.

The Kevin’s responded with an effort just before the half-time whistle to leave the minimum between the sides, 1–6 to 1–5 at the interval in favour of the Pat’s.

Jake McArdle extended the lead to two with a point after seven minutes of the restart but the Philipstown side responded with a point of their own three minutes later.

Padraig Duffy added his second point for Pat’s who then took control when James Savage found the back of the net to extend the lead to five midway through the half.

The next score of the game came from the Kevin’s after Pat’s goalie Martin McEneaney had denied them a certain goal with a brilliant save a minute earlier.

The impressive Duffy added his third point of the night but the Kevin’s hung in there and reduced the lead to four with eight minutes to play.

Pat’s were awarded a penalty in the 27th minute of the half when James Savage was brought to ground by the Kevin’s goalie and Conor Watters made no mistake with the spot kick, blasting it to the back of the net.

And the home side made sure of the win when Joseph Connor added a free just before the final whistle.
