Brendan Sheils scored Glenmuir’s equaliser against Rathkenny on Friday night

Glenmuir United caused a Fitzsimons Cup shock on Friday night, sending Division Two side Rathkenny packing in this last 16 tie at Hoey’s Lane with a 5–2 win.

Despite operating one tier below the visitors, Wayne Conroy’s side totally dominated proceedings apart from the opening few minutes when they fell a goal behind.

From there on in the Blues took complete control but it wasn’t until the stroke of half time that they drew level when Brendan Shiels fired home after good play from John Byrne.

The home side went 2–1 up early in the second-half when Sean Murray finished off a superb team move and the same player doubled his tally soon after to make it 3–1 and all but secure the home side’s passage to the last eight.

Three-one became 4–1 in the 65th minute when Byrne got in the act with a smart finish from the edge of the area after good build-up play by strike partner Danny Mullen.

Byrne doubled his tally just minutes later, sweeping home a wonderful crossfield ball from Ashraf Bin Jamal to put the game to bed before Rathkenny grabbed a late consolation from the penalty spot.

GLENMUIR UNITED: John Burlingham, David McComish, Oisin Murray, Niall Hand (Rory Phelan), Sean Murray (Liam Cunningham), Mark Molloy (Liam McKenny), David O’Donovan, Eimhin Caldwell (Ashraf Bin Jamal), Brendan Sheils (Ronan Hand), John Byrne, Danny Mullen.
