NEFL | Glenmuir go sixth after comfortable win over Newtown

NEFL Division Three | Glenmuir United 3–0 Newtown

--

After spending most of the campaign rooted to the bottom of the table, Glenmuir United suddenly find themselves sitting nicely in sixth place of Division Three after a comfortable win over Newtown United on Wednesday night.

The withdrawal of Lourdes Celtic, coupled with the three points from this win, means that Wayne Conroy’s side are suddenly looking up rather than nervously over their shoulders.

The Blues totally dominated the first half and it was no surprise when they went in front after 15 minutes when Sean Murray fired home after being set up by his twin brother Oisin from an Eimhin Caldwell corner.

Caldwell went close to doubling Glenmuir’s lead just minutes later but his effort was superbly saved by the home side’s goalkeeper.

Glenmuir piled on the pressure and with 25 minutes on the clock they pulled further in front, David McComish sweeping home after good approach play by Luke Murray.

At this stage, the writing was on the wall for Newtown and when John Byrne raced cleared it looked like there was only one outcome but striker’s powerful effort sailed over the bar. Caldwell then saw a good effort saved by the visiting goalkeeper.

The second-half proved to be a bit lacklustre with Glenmuir struggling to maintain their first half momentum but they never looked like losing their lead.

Another goal did arrive, Sean Murray grabbing his second of the game with a speculative effort from all of 30 yards to put the seal on the win.

To their credit, Newtown didn’t give up but Glenmuir stood firm to record their first clean sheet of the season and they will look to maintain their good run of form when they travel to Ballyjamesduff this Sunday.

GLENMUIR UNITED: John Burlingham, Willy Kelly (Liam McKenny), Oisin Murray, Edgar Bitanis, Niall Hand, David McComish (Peter McDermott), Eimhin Caldwell, Eamonn Kenny (Ronan Molloy), Sean Murray, Luke Murray (Ashraf Bin Jamal), John Byrne (Danny Mullen).
