Dundalk RFC’s Caoimhe O’Callaghan has been named in the Ireland U18 Girls Sevens squad that will compete in the Home Nations tournament in Wales next week.

Caoimhe will be looking to build on her success with the Irish squad who won silver medals at the U18 Girls Sevens at the Paris World Games in July.

After winning their opening five games, the girls in green overcame French sides RC Feminines du Pays de Brest and Fanatics Massy before slipping to a narrow defeat against Canada’s NRU Thunder in the final.

The Irish squad will also face the best sides in Europe at the Rugby Europe U18 Women’s Sevens Championship in Poland at the end of this month.

“We send our sincere congratulations and best wishes to Caoimhe and we are delighted that her exceptional talent, commitment, and hard work will be acknowledged with another Irish cap,” said Dundalk RFC PRO Mary Murdock.

“Caoimhe has been an exemplary ambassador for girls rugby at Dundalk RFC and an exemplary role model for the girls who play the game of rugby in the north-east.

“The club would also like to send our sincere congratulations to Caoimhe’s very proud family,” she added. “Her parents Fergus and Sinead have supported her and encouraged her from when she began to play with Dundalk RFC Minis and have also supported the club at every opportunity.”

A number of other Dundalk RFC club members have also been in action for their province in recent weeks.

Cathal Purcell was named in the starting XV for Leinster U19s in their friendly with Exeter Chiefs on Friday. The U19s will kick-off their Interprovincial Championship campaign on August 17th against Ulster Rugby at Energia Park.

Elsewhere, U18 players Darragh Maher and Joshua O’Hare were both a part of the Leinster U18 Clubs squad that played in a blitz in England on Friday against Newcastle Falcons and Yorkshire Carnegie in preparation for their Interprovincial Series which kicks off on August 17th at the University of Limerick.
