Inebriated; not by spirits but by souls.

Stained sheets and castles blown.

Trust built on glass not set in stone.

Beliefs were rendered to dust.

You could only count on lust.

Once bitten twice shy.

She started living a lie.

Every night a different soul.

Her only warmth in the bitter cold.

The hissing of his breath against her ear

The thumping of a heart frightened her.

She couldn’t breathe. She forgot to breathe.

Trying to match an unemotional beat.

In the midst of the silence she would lay still,

Convincing herself to remain nonchalant.

Listless till dawn broke,

Her thoughts clogged with smoke.

A cloak of dread lay heavy,

As she tried to wash away the memory.

A note on the night stand caught her eye,

Where bills laid, signed, until next time.
