Addressing Traffic Citations Online

In some cases, you may be able to address a pending traffic court matter online and avoid having to come to court. Information about online court services, including traffic matters, can be found at nccourts.gov/services.

Here is some guidance on requesting a dismissal for compliance, requesting a speeding reduction, and paying fines and fees. These services are regularly available to the public, not just during the pandemic.

Paying a ticket

For some traffic offenses, such as equipment or minor speeding violations, you may be able to “waive” your court appearance and resolve the matter by paying your ticket online. Please note that by waiving your right to contest your charges in court, you will be treated as if you were found guilty as charged. This could affect your driver’s license or car insurance.

To pay a ticket, look up your citation here on the Judicial Branch website.

Requesting dismissals for cases in compliance

For certain traffic offenses, for example having an expired inspection, the District Attorney’s office may agree to dismiss the charge via online request upon receiving proof that you have corrected the underlying problem.

To determine whether your case is eligible for a possible dismissal, look up your citation here on the Judicial Branch website. If your case is eligible, you will be able to select “Request Dismissal.”

In some cases, proof of insurance may be required and can be uploaded online. You must provide a valid email address to complete the process; you will be notified via email of any changes to the status of your case.

Follow the instructions here to request a dismissal based on compliance. You can also pay a ticket through the same process.

Requesting a speeding reduction

For certain speeding offenses, the District Attorney’s office may agree to reduce the charge to a less serious offense via online request.

To determine whether your case is eligible for a possible reduction, look up your citation here on the Judicial Branch website. If your case is eligible, you will be able to select “Request Reduction.”

Follow the instructions here to request a speeding reduction. You can also pay a ticket through the same process. Proof of insurance may be required.

You will be notified via email of any changes to the status of your case.
