Welcome to my District — Half Day in Tokwawan 土瓜灣

Have you ever taken a good look at your own city or the district you live in?

Traveling is fun because we find the new scenery interesting and fresh. How about applying your curiosity towards new places into your own neighbourhood.

On The Hill Coffee

Tokwawan is an old district, it is a blessing that small stores can still survive here.

On the Hill Coffee

You can hardly find a cafe to chill in Tokwawan in the past. It is such a good news that On the Hill Coffee is opened earlier in April. It is decorated with white marble and wood. The white tone of the cafe is so refreshing and cozy, the style reminds me of Arabica %. They also serve house-made bagels and cakes along with range of coffees. Dirty is one of their signature drinks, it is a mixture of iced milk and Espresso, which you probably can’t find in common cafe.

Playground inside 高山道公園 Ko Shan Road Park

Ko Shan Theatre 高山劇場 is one of a few performing venues for Cantonese Opera in Hong Kong. It opened in 1983. Tennis court was demolished for the construction of Ko Shan Theatre New Wing(opened in 2014).

Soccer field and the playground inside the park are the paradise for children at the weekend.

樂民新邨三期 Lok Man Sun Chuen Site 3

Lok Man Sun Chuen 樂民新邨

It is a housing estate constructed by the Hong Kong Housing Society 房協 in the 1970s. There are 9 Blocks in total(A-I), they are built in 3 different phrases.

First Phrase: Block F and G (Kau Pui Lung Road)

Second Phrase: Block A to E (Kau Pui Lung Road)

Third Phrase: Block H and I (Ko Shan Road)

Along Chatham Road North 漆咸道北, there are lots of furniture and home decor stores. The most well-known one is called Ulferts 歐化傢俬.

As an old district, lots of shabby buildings are being renovated throughout the years. Colorful buildings can be easily found along To Kwa Wan Road 土瓜灣道 and Ma Tau Kok Road 馬頭角道(Known as 13 Streets 十三街).

Ugliness behind the Color — Urban Redevelopment

There are 6 ongoing urban redevelopment projects in To Kwa Wan.

6個項目所涉街道包括春田街、祟志街、庇利街、榮光街、鴻福街、銀漢街及啟明街

The urban redevelopment in TKW can be divided into two parts.

  1. 春田街、祟志街、庇利街發展項目

This project is launched mainly because of the collapse of a Tong lau 唐樓 in Jan 2010, causing casualties(4 dead, 2 injuries).

2. 榮光街、鴻福街、銀漢街及啟明街

Acquisition for the redevelopment projects has been completed up to 85% so far. Currently, this part of TKW is kinda like a ghost town, only some garages and small restaurants are still open in this area. The neighborhood is eerily quiet.

Old Neighborhood vs Newly-developed Private Housing

Neighborhood near Wan Tat Steet 環達街

Soda Mall is a shopping mall of 環海東岸 (Upper East). It is a private development project run by Kowloon Development 九建(0034). Each floor there are 36 flats, imagine how tiny flats would be, it is even more packed than the 70s public housing. Ironically, the price of such a small flat is not cheap and affordable. Its existence is oddly inconsistent with the old buildings around.
