Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance Business Performance Planning Integrated with Dataverse
In this blog I want to tell you about a new business performance management functionality that integrates with Dynamics 365 Finance Business Performance Planning. In today’s economy, CFOs have a need to acquire and use advanced planning tools to better drive organizations through factors such as innovation, short-term resilience or long-term gains. With this new functionality, finance leaders can anticipate emerging risks and drive innovation.
What does business performance planning offer us?
This application provides financial and operational analysis and planning that creates a connected business experience. You can work with tools such as Microsoft Power BI and Excel, which will help you plan and create hypothetical scenarios. This application is integrated with Dataverse and thanks to this we can leverage our analysis using data streams and Microsoft Power Platform to eliminate manual processes and achieve optimal efficiency for your company.
In this functionality we will use cubes, dimensions and data, these concepts are important when performing business planning in this new tool.
Configuring and using Enterprise Performance Planning
The process of setting up and using Enterprise Performance Planning involves the following tasks:
- Create dimensions
- Create cubes
- Load fact data into cubes
- Connect Power BI to data
- Install planning images
- Configure visual objects
- Protect by dimension or cube (available in a later version)

I already told you a little bit about what this new feature is all about, so now we will see how to install it and get it ready to work.
The installation requires two important modules, one is the application that is installed in Dataverse and the other is the installation of visual objects in PBI to be able to generate the financial analysis.
Prerequisites
This installation requires a Tier-2 (Multi-box) environment.
It is not necessary to have the latest version of Dynamics 365 Finance version 10.0.37 and the platform update (PU) 61 but it can provide additional options to have more general ledger information in a balance sheet format through process automations.
To get started you must have a power platform environment integrated with dynamics 365 finance and you must have a premium finance license, if you do not have a finance license you will not see the Business performance planning icon as a shortcut.
Installing the business perfomance planner application in power Platform Admin Center.
Go to environments -> Resources -> Dynamics 365 apps->Install app-> Select app
A standard Dynamics 365 Finance license is required to install the business performance planning app. To perform any planning operations, you must have a Finance premium license.
Once the application is installed, go to the power platform environment, you can go to the url through the power platform admin center, or you can go directly from Dynamics 365 finance
On the environment home page, select Security roles. The following Business performance planning roles and assign them to users.
Install business performance planning visuals
Visual objects provide a wide range of tools that add financial planning and reporting capabilities to Power BI, enabling fast insight and informed decision making. Through intuitive controls and powerful features, visual objects transform financial planning by promoting accuracy, efficiency and agility. As a result, you can focus on strategic analysis rather than data manipulation.
For its installation we must follow the next steps:
Open Power BI, and select the workspace or report where you intend to configure the visual.
Select in PBI Import a power bi visual from AppSource
Confirm that the visual was downloaded from AppSource.
In the visualizations we can see the installed visual report and now we will place the visual report by dragging it to the report canvas.
Select the visual on the report canvas, and then select the Format visual tab on the report canvas. In the API Details window for the visual, add your API base URL. The API base URL is the URL of the environment where business performance planning is installed. The environment URL must be preceded by https:// (for example, https://environment.d365.com).
The Format visual tab is available only when a visual is selected on the report canvas.
Now you can start to perform your financial analysis with this new tool, although it is in preview version, it is very good that you start to know its spectacular functionalities!
