When you have the tools to seize the reins and take control of your career path, luck becomes part of everyday life.

By Lani Aquino

In the realm of instructional leadership, where every decision and action can shape the trajectory of students, educators, and stakeholders, waiting on luck to rule the day simply isn’t an option. Instead, the feeling or idea of luck can become a part of the daily culture when leaders make deliberate choices and drive progress. While feeling luck may occasionally come into play, it’s truly the groundwork created in purposeful actions and decisions that allows the magic to happen. To truly excel in one’s career, and life in general, a person must actively take charge. These are three strategies to help seize the day!

1. Set Clear Goals & a Defined Path

One of the most important ways to take control of one’s career path is by setting clear and achievable goals. Without a roadmap, it’s easy to get swayed by external forces. Step one would be to envision where you want to be in the short term (one to two years), mid-term (three to five years), and long-term (five years or more). These goals should encompass both professional milestones and personal aspirations.

Once a clear vision has been established, the next step is to break down the goals into actionable steps. What skills need to be developed? What experiences need to be gained? By creating a roadmap with measurable objectives, direction is given, and a sense of accountability is instilled. Regular review and adjustment of said goals is needed, while staying flexible yet focused on the overarching vision.

More importantly, don’t be afraid to seek mentorship or guidance from those who have walked similar paths. Learning from others’ experiences can provide valuable insights. These lightbulbs and shortcuts can help illuminate the journey and make goal attainment more efficient.

2. Cultivate a Growth Mindset

In instructional leadership, adaptability and continuous learning are non-negotiables. Embracing a growth mindset is crucial for taking control of one’s career path. Instead of viewing challenges as setbacks, they should be seen as opportunities for growth and development.

A growth mindset empowers a person to embrace change, seek feedback, and persist in facing obstacles. It’s about the belief that abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work rather than being seen as fixed traits. By adopting this perspective, a person will be more inclined to take calculated risks, step out of a comfort zone, and pursue ambitious goals.

Additionally, it is crucial to prioritize ongoing learning and skill development. This can involve attending professional development workshops/cohorts, pursuing further education, or engaging in self-directed study. The big idea is to never stop investing in personal growth. The more a person’s knowledge and expertise are expanded, the more control this person has over his/her career trajectory.

3. Take Strategic Action & Embrace Ownership

Ultimately, taking control of one’s career path requires proactive, strategic action. Instead of waiting for opportunities to fall from the sky, they must be actively sought. By identifying areas where a meaningful impact can be made and taking ownership of initiatives that align with personal goals and values, the path toward opportunity will become clearer.

This might involve spearheading new projects, initiating collaborations, and/or advocating for change. Don’t underestimate the power of networking and building relationships both within and outside of one’s own district or field. Opportunities often arise through connections and serendipitous encounters, but it’s up to the individual to make the most of them.

Moreover, taking control of one’s path means possessing a willingness to take calculated risks and pivot when necessary. Not every decision will lead to immediate success, but each experience will contribute to a person’s growth and resilience. By embracing ownership, a person becomes empowered to shape the future rather than leaving it to chance.

Instructional leaders must recognize that success is not a matter of luck; success is the byproduct of deliberate action and mindset. By setting clear goals, cultivating a growth mindset, and taking strategic actions, leaders can take control of their career trajectories and drive meaningful progress. Now isn’t the time to wait for luck to come knocking- seize the reins and be the one who forges the path to success!
